If the universe is expanding... what is it expanding into

  1. It's expanding into the 4th dimension.

    We can't comprehend more than our 3-dimensional world, so the best way to think of the expansion of the Universe is to imagine an expanding air balloon. Imagine that the 2-dimensional surface of the balloon is the Universe, and as it's expanding, every point on the surface is moving away from all other points. If there were 2D beings living on that 2D surface, their world would stretch out infinitely in all directions, with no edge or boundary. Their world would be expanding, but it would not be expanding into anything, because there's no "outside". Sounds familiar?

    To us, our Universe is endless, there's no "outside" of it. It's expanding, but it's not expanding into anything. Rather, the distances between all the objects are increasing.

  3. That's the question. You are right on the Semantics side.

    Here, what is meant by expansion, is  the distances between constituents of the universe are increasing in a proportionate manner. That is all we know now.

    some people say that when its expanding baby galaxy's get created between the old galaxy's and they grow bigger so the distance between galaxy's stays the same thing and 2*infinity is infinity.

    another one says that there is no baby  galaxy's.

  10. What do you mean, what is it expanding into? It's just expanding. We can't see outside it, so we wouldn't know what it was expanding into even if it was expanding 'into' anything.
