  1. I'm on FTM16 and I like its graphing and pdf capabilities. I realize I'll have to migrate to Vista someday. I've been doing the free trials for Legacy, The Master Genealogist, and others. Unfortunately, all the genealogists I've met get their panties in a bunch over this, and it's just like Mac vs PC questions... lots of opinions, and no helpful answers.

I have met some former FTM users who run both the 2008 version and their old version, because they like some things about both versions.

Good luck. I fear we're going to end up being  unpaid professional beta-testers in order to get the software we're comfortable with. Email me with your results...

(This review makes me a looker, not an up-dater, because I like charts, reports & pdf compatiblity. Maybe they've fixed the issue, maybe not. But it's worth the read: http://genealogy.about.com/od/software_r...

  2. I have it and it is quite different to the FTM 2005 I was using before. It will load files from earlier versions of FTM but it takes up a lot more memory, and takes a while to load up, if that is a problem. It also crashed until I used the compact file feature. On the plus side, it has added features from similar software; the charts are much much better, though still room for improvement, and you can search names rather than having to scroll through them. There is probably better software available, but the link with Ancestry.com probably gives it the biggest edge.
