Fantasy 1B: Giambi or Thames?

Question

Picked up Marcus Thames during his HR streak, but need a consistently productive 1B. Jason Giambi is still available and on fire...

Who will stay hot and who would you choose?

Funny you should ask this question.  I live in Detroit and there was a similar topic on the radio yesterday while I was driving home.  

Marcus Thames is obviously extremely hot right now.  He is a life time .243 hitter (if I remember correctly).  He strikes out 1 out of every 4 AB's.  He has never had more than 350 ab's in a season (again if I remember correctly).  He is very streaky.

Jason Giambi obviously has a higher career batting average and will give you more in terms of power production over the course of the season because he is indeed more consistent.  His career numbers prove it.  He is still very serviceable and very dangerous in terms of his power.  Also, I think pitchers respect Giambi more than Thames.  

Another point to remember is that Thames will be fighting for playing time when Sheffield returns.  Sheffield makes 16 million dollars a year.  Thames makes maybe 2-4 million a year.  I think it safe to say that Sheffield gets the playing time.

Giambi may be fat, but right now he is better than Thames. Giambi's been hot for 1 month, whereas Thames just had a 1 week HR streak. Giambi is much better right now, and although he wont be very consistent, he will be MUCH more consistent than Thames.

gIAMBI,  he has the best OBP of ALL 1st baseman, and hes hot.

Giambi is fat and out of shape.  I'm not saying Thames is a picture of health, but he is starting to play a lot more for a red hot Detroit Tigers team.  You figure at least Polanco, Ordonez, or Cabrera will be on every time he comes to bat.  Thames will have a lot more RBI chances than steroids spokesperson Jason Giambi.

Giambi. he has the trackrecord, he hits in a better lineup and he has job security

giambi, thames has power, but its not equal to giambi. Thames has been hot lately, as has giambi, but giambi will be better in the long run and he has a team that has more talent around him
