I was wondering what sort of speed one would have to be doing for a crash to be fatal. I know it will vary between car and what what the car hits, so lets take a typical car (old model Ford Focus / Vauxhall Astra ) hitting a brick wall.

Just started driving and worried about safty atm.

  1. Really, a woman has died within 24 hours of hitting a solid object at 5 mph.  Furthermore, children have died unbelted in Mall Parking Lots in 5 - 10 mph crashes.  Usually 25 - 30 mph is a bad thing for anybody, devastating if the object struck is immovable.

  2. No minimum speed, it depends on a lot of other factors. Formula 1 cars crash at 250+ mph without fatalities. Passenger cars, as another person has stated, can involve fatalities at very low speeds. Best defense is to drive defensively - if you are a new driver, take a DD course, or even a high speed maneuvering course at a local racing school. Your confidence and driving ability will improve greatly.
