Favorite author??..?

Question

I'm NOT a fan of reading for pleasure. In the past, I read works by Stephen King, Anne Rice and Dean Koontz but it's been a really long time. I have to write about my favorite author and list reasons. I don't have a favorite and I could use some suggestions on what current books to pick up and of course authors that one should follow. I don't think I'll impress my professor with anyone I've mentioned. I'm not asking for you to do my assignment, some advice will suffice.

David Moody and Stephenie Meyer. Both very smart and individually different. I love them both dearly. :]

David Moody explains so vividly what death is.

And Stephenie has such a twisted and cynical, yet enticingly thrilling, view of life and what it has to offer. Whether it's little or a lot! :]

ohh, and a classic, legendary author that everyone will probably recognize is "George Orwell."

Words can't even explain how magnificent his writing is. :]

♠These are the books that got me hooked on these authors, but it's not the ONLY good books from them. It's just the books that I personally recommend.

Thomas Pynchon. He is the reason there was no Pulitzer Prize awarded in 1974. And his books are the archetypes of postmodernism, and represent the continuation of American satire through Twain and Vonnegut.

Another teacher-impressor is T.C. Boyle, who writes very symbolic novels about racial and socioeconomic conflicts in America, such as immigration, and is famous for turning his readers against themselves.

One more: William Gibson. Basically invented modern science fiction, coined the term 'cyberspace', and developed the idea that we are already living in the future.

the twilight books are not "impressive" in any sense of the word.  that is really the only advice i feel confident giving.  i have never read them, but any vampire book besides Dracula isn't impressive.

My favorite is author is Edgar allan Po. His writing is creative and thoughtful and it takes a lot of thinking and intelligence to understand hisoriginal writing. his poems are thoughtful and his short stories are mind captivating. "Tell Tale Heart" was one of sir po's best peices of works, and was read by thousands of peple in it's day and current times. Edgar allan po was said to be mad from some of his writings, but most people say that he is just misunderstood. While reading "The raven," i saw a completely opposite point of view and setting and completely different emotion than when i was reading "Annabelle Lee"

Edgar Allan po to this day is still a very famous author, and his writing is referred to in many english classes. Some oung authors look up to him, while others fown on him with skeptimism for his sometimes 'gothic,' or 'insane' peices of art. I for one look up to his wonderful writings, and love to read his works.

I'm sure you know this, but I just wanted to mention that any professor would laugh hysterically at anyone who handed in a paper on Stephanie Meyer or Twilight. If it were me, I would shred it before I even read it.

I like Anthony Burgess (A Clockwork Orange) and Annie Proulx ("Brokeback Mountain" from the Close Range short story collection).

And I'll second Chuck Palahniuk - his themes are a little darker but I find him extremely relevant for modern society and the GenX- and Y-ers.

These three aren't obscure, but are probably a little less obvious, so they could very well be impressive.

Chuck Palahniuk (who wrote the infamous "Fight Club" and "Choke"), Kurt Vonnegut (who wrote "Slaughterhouse Five" and "Breakfast for Champions), and Tim O'Brien (who wrote "The Things They Carried" and "Tomcat in Love")

All are spectacular writers, with their own blunt, beautiful, shocking style.

Jane Austen. She's not a type of a miserable author 'cause evne she wasn't been scholled by a governess, she still figure out to be a good writer.

i read for pleasure and most of what i read probably won't help you but some of my favorites are Mercedes Lackey (Fantasy) Marion Zimmer Bradly (sci fi fantasy) and Clive Cussler (adventure/mystery)

they are my favorites for pretty much the same reasons.... Their Characters are not perfect, they get dirty, beat up and have bad days. there isn't always a happy ending but they don't leave you hanging either.

they have strong story lines that keep going through out the whole book so you aren't board and wishing the book to be over. (ok sometimes Cussler gets a little too descriptive) they are full of emotions, you laugh, cry and feel good.... sometime get a little angry when things don't go the way you want it too for the main characters.

i enjoy anything by these authors, be it series, single books, short stores, or an interview.... i never find i want to put down one of their books and i reread everything by Mercedes Lackey once or twice a year,,,

Haruki Murakami, Ian McKewan, Kurt Vonnegut and Margaret Atwood would never be bad names to throw at your english professor.

I'm currently reading the Inheritance Of Loss by Hiran Desai which is pretty impressive so far.

If you have been out of reading for a while (or forever if you're reading stephen king) check out winners of the Man Booker prize. Sometimes the books that win aren't the authors best necessarily, but it will give you a good guide.

I love Stephenie Meyer with her book twilight. It's a really good book, also very long, i surprisingly finished it in 2 days, because it was soo amazingly written. You should do her!
