Question:

Feeding my beta fish.?

I won a beta fish at a sweet sixteen. I got a paper with it that said to feed it around 3 times a week (about 8 beta fish food pebbles). My grandma said that was cruel, and said to just give it 5 little pebbles of food, every day. I've been doing that for about a month, but im not sure if i should. Help? How many times should i feed my fish, and about how much pebbles?

  1. One of the main problems with betta's is that no one realizes the care they should ideally have.

I didn't either, so I'm not blaming you!

Betta's are tropical fish, so they should have warmer water, ideally close to 80 degrees, I've got a heater that will keep the tank at 78 degrees. Before, he only ate maybe once a week, even when I tried to feed him more, he became really ill and almost died. I got him a 1 gallon tank, with a circulator, and the heater, and he eats voraciously twice a day now

So listen to your grandma, and get your fishie a heater, you won't believe the difference!!!

BTW, I got my tank at Wal-Mart for $10...

  2. 5 pellets when u get up every day :)

  3. we feed ours every day 3-5 pebbles it's best if you feed one at a time and make sure he sees it and then you have less waste and the tank stays cleaner.

  4. I have 5 Betta's and this is what I do

I feed twice a day for 5 days then on the 6th day they get a blanched peeled pea and on the 7th day they don't get fed. Also On the day they don't eat is the day I do the 20-25% water change.

The pea is like a laxitive for fish and I don't feed them once a week because bettas can become constipated and bloated and this helps with that.

Also I have a variety of foods. I feed betta flakes, pellets, frozen bloodworms, frozen brine shrimp, and frozen tubifex worms.  If you can find them they also like frozen glass worms (masquito larve)

  5. I had a beta fish for 3 long years! And I'm not exaggerating! I'm not proud of this but I even tried to kill it with glass cleaner (i was young) and it would not die for anything in the world! So just make sure you feed it 8pebbles three times a day! If you feel this is two much feed it a little less! Just use your intuition!

  6. you should be feeding your fish 2-3 times daily. 3-5 pellets each feeding is fine. Feeding it 3 times a week IS cruel, you're basically starving him, but only giving him enough so that he doesn't die. Bettas also need heaters in their tanks, despite what non-experts say. They require water that is bewteen 68 and 84 degrees farenheit.

  7. Your grandmother is absolutely right.  They should eat about 5 pebbles everyday.  Listen to her, she knows what she's talking about.  ; )

  8. Look it up online. Also on the food container it will tell you "just feed the fish the amount he finishes within 3 minutes you are to also feed them 2-3 times a day. Good Luck!! try Google !! Here's a site I found for you..HOPE it helps !!
