Question:

Feeding toddler quick breakfast??

We are both working parents. My son is 2 1/2 and he already has to wake up early to get to daycare on time so we can get to work. He is a slow riser, but I don't want to wake him up any earlier. Does anyone have any quick, maybe even "on the go" breakfast ideas that he might like? He is a good eater and not picky at all it's just that it takes him too long to wake up in the morning and by the time he's ready to eat, it's time to leave. We could even take his breakfast in the car with us since we have a 15 minute drive. Thanks for your ideas!

  1. If he is okay with eating such things, Poptarts (specially the bar ones), Cereal in the bag with a go gurt or milk on the side, cheese stick with bread wrapped around it (you could even slice cheese stick in fours and roll out bread so it is thinner or use white or wheat tortillas - Cut up fruit is good if mixed with some sort of protien and carb. Cereal, toaster struedal cut in strips. Bagel with cream cheese cut in strips. All drinks in a sippy cup. Also I try to keep a towel spread out under my son's car seat for in car eating so we can clean it easier. Good Wishes!

  2. Drinkable Yogurt by Yo-Baby. Its really filling and nutritious. I use it all the time when I need something quick to feed and not enough time.

You can also make grilled cheese in advance, cut it in little pieces, put it in the cereal cup, so that he can take it with his own fingers and eat in the car. Or combine the two if your son is a good eater.

  3. I think I would talk to the day care about having him eat breakfast there.  Pack his breakfast and sit him down when he gets there.  Eating in the car is a really bad (and messy) habit to get into.  At this age, he needs to be learning proper table manners, and rule number one is you sit at the table at mealtimes!

  4. Toast (in one piece), and milk in a sippy bottle.  He could have this in the car without much fuss.  Please don't give him breakfast bars - those things are so full of sugar, and so unhealthy.

  5. Any fruit-cut up in very small pieces to avoid choking

    fruit and cereal bars

    cheerios

eggo waffle w/ grape jelly (less mess on the go)

    bagel with cream cheese

    pbj on whole wheat

    microwaved turkey bacon

    scrambled egg in a bowl

  6. I have seen these new stuffed bagel rolls in Walmart recently.  They are like a long bagel with cream cheese already in them... I thought hmm, what a great Idea!  Also, you could feed him muffins or nutrigrain bars/cereal bars... (just try not to get the one's high in sugar) and a juice box or something for the car...

    Hope this helps!

  7. Kellogs fruit filled breakfast bars are pretty good, even for an adult.  My son loves yogurt, and eats that for breakfast, but it might be hard to do in the car.  Why not just bring a baggie full of dry cereal to munch on along the way?  You could always fill a thermos or sippy with milk for drinks.

  8. Cereal Bars - look for ones with the least sugar and the most nutrients

Wheat Toast - with butter and for a special treat sprinkle cinnamon &sugar on top as well

    Waffles - plain

Fruit - give him a whole apple, banana, pear, whatever or a bag of strawberries / blueberries /etc.

Mini Fruit Salad - make a mini fruit salad for him with his favorite fruits in a sandwich bag or plastic bowl

Cereal - give him dry cereal in a plastic sandwich bag

Cheese - either give him string cheese or cheese slices and a few whole wheat crackers

Muffin - make muffins ahead of time and hand him one as you head out the door

Bagel - give one half of a bagel with either cream cheese or peanut butter

English Muffin - one half of one with melted cheese or a whole one with melted cheese

If you are not worried about your car that much, you could even do eggs / bacon / sausage / hash browns / etc. in a plastic bowl. If you would give him bacon, make sure it is turkey. That is much healthier than normal bacon. You could even do veggies and dip. He's 2.5, he doesn't care whether it's 'breakfast food' or not. As long as it's not chips and cookies. Always accompany his breakfast with a cup of milk. A go-gurt could always be a nice side as well. If you freeze them, they are less messy.

  9. dont know how healthy they are but my son likes cereal bars

  10. try fruit and a sippy cup milk. Or a cereal bar like nutri-grain or the ones from  Gerber. Granola bars if he can chew them. With some milk. Yogurt and juice to go. These worked great for my kids when they were toddlers. Also just go down the cereal isle and see what you can find. Cheerios in a little baggy and milk in a cup. Try to avoid pop-tarts and those new cereal bars that have the milk in them, and those cereal straws. Those are just sugar and basically candy and not a good way to start the day.

Hope this gave you some ideas..... :)

  11. banana

    cereal bar

    granola bar

    bagel http://www.kraftfoods.com/bagelfuls/

    poptart/waffle

    apple

    strawberries

cereal in a bag with a sippy cup with milk in it

  12. Toast with jelly

    Eggos

    Banana

Dry cereal (skies the limit-cheerios, chex, even some sugary c**p once in a while)

Bagels cut in half with peanut butter

Hash browns (not the shredded ones, but like the ones from McDonalds)

You can offer a sippy cup of milk and maybe a couple whole strawberries along with whatever main breakfast item you offer...

  13. If I were in this situation, I would probably allow him to sleep as long as possible, get him up and ready for the car, offer him a small snack while he still waking up (like cherrios or a banana..or maybe even just a cup of milk)...then ask the daycare if they could allow him to sit down and continue with his breakfast (maybe pack some yogurt, bagel, fresh fruit, cereal etc), that way he can sit down and enjoy a good breakfast without having to hurry up and quickly eat it up...I am sure it's tough for him to wake up and eat right away...he may want to take things a lot slower in the morning and breakfast after all is the most important meal of the day...if he gets in the habit of eating things on the go, or in a hurry, it could be a habbit he will have for the rest of his life. Studies have shown that school aged children do a lot better in school when they;ve had a nutritious breakfast. Good luck.
