Ferret diseases?

Hello everyone! I am posting this for a friend who is in the market for a Ferret. She is working on getting the money together, because she has a real love for the little fuzzies. However, she has read that Ferrets are prone to many various diseases. She is very, very committed to getting a fuzzy to love but it afraid her time will be cut short due to some very common diseases of Ferrets.

So what I am asking is, are Ferrets very prone to diseases? I have researched one called Adrenal, which seems the most common out of them all.

Thank you all so much!

  1. Mine died from pneumonia.  I don't really know if they are prone to diseases, but as soon as they start acting funny or their hair dries up, get it to a vet asap.

  2. There are common diseases with ferrets but some have no luck in life because they might start off sick, My advice is to get a ferret from a good breeder with papers and records of vaccines and keep them up to dates on shots and vet visits. and I suggest reading "Ferrets for Dummies" it's a weird name but alot of help.

  3. I have had 2 Ferrets for over two years. Neither one has had a disease. One time I took one to the vet becuase he was acting funny and was very lethargic.Ended up being from the heat...it was over 90 for like 3 days.A little rest and water and he was fine. My fiancee has worked in a pet store for 3 years now and said she has never heard of anyone of the customers complaining about ferrets diseases. They are very lovable and with proper handling, will learn to "poo" in a litter pan. They LOVE to play...especially games like chase...Im always chasing them around then they sneak out and chase me. Just make sure you get one from a respected pet store and get their papers with them(birth papers and vaccinations) It is also reccomended that they visit a vet regularly like a cat for checkups and a distemperment shot.Mine dont visit regularly, but they get the shot..good luck with it...they are great pets.....

  4. The most common diseases ferrets get are  Insulinoma and Adrenal Disease. They can contract the diseases as early as 2 year. Both are curable, but very expencive.

    There are several others too.
