Question:

First scooter and looking for advice!?

by  |  earlier

I'm considering buying a scooter - only a cheap older one (02-03 plate). I have found a Yamaha Slider 49cc 02 plate for sale. Are these any good?

Also can anyone give me just some general advice about riding one - what kit I'd need - how expensive they are etc.

I'm a complete novice to things like this so any advice would be great!

Thank you!

  1. i got my first scooter last year im now on my third.i started off with a piaggio zzip 49cc.old as the hills but alot more reliable than some of the new ones.if your wanting a scooter for reliability i wouldent mod it in anyway.basicaly the faster you go the easyer it is on strait roads.

dont lean on corners too far as scooters are heavy but you need to lean a little to make it!take round abouts as slow as you can.

and take no notice of the ignorant cars up ur ***!

  2. Probably as good as it can be which isn't much. 49cc is about the same size as a medium size model airplane engine. You didn't say how old you were but if you are an age to get a license get one and a cycle endorsement. Unless you live in the south of the south west USA be prepared to encounter a lot of rain, snow, dirt, bugs, hi heat. Not every day is a nice riding day and traffic is a real mess.

Personally I'd get a car as a first vehicle. Did I say Cycling isn't fun? No I didn't but if it rains I will take my car.

  3. Yamaha scooters hold up pretty well.  There are many modifications that you can make to a 49cc scooter to get them going 60+ MPH so dont listen to everyones negative comments about 49cc scooters.  They are more than adequate especially if just riding inner city.  There are several members on http://www.scootforum.com that have modded their 49cc scooter with only $300 and get 55-60MPH!  I'm sure they'd be willing to answer your questions in detail there :)  Happy scooting... its a lot of fun

  5. i'm not sure what you mean by 'what kit'.... but it's a 49cc scooter... a helmet and blue jeans will do fine....

it's a yamaha.... pretty much anything from the four big makers is atleast decent.... it's pretty rare to find an 'edsel' in them... (but they do happen lol... funnily enough honda even used the same first letter for their 'edsel' any older rider should know what i'm getting at)
