  1. *a collar with name tag

    *Litter box

    *Litter and scoop

    *Food and water bowls

*Dry food (Purina or another good brand)

    *Canned food

    *Toys

    *Brush

    *Nail Clippers

*A pet carrier, for traveling to the vet

    **Here are some extras;

*a scratching post, so he or she won't scratch up the furniture.

*a kitty condo, so your kitty can jump and play.

    *treats

*some toys that you can use to play together with (like string or feather toys)

*a pet bed, in case you want him or her to sleep in a soft, comfy place, but you're not allowed to her it on your bed.

  2. well i have two cats and i find that the younger one uses a scatching post and buy lots of toys for them. it will need to have wet mushy food for awhile. a litter box, collar( put one on it first thing so they get used to it my older one wont wear one cuz you can't teach an old cat new tricks or is that dogs lol) If you find that you like cats and you want another one and can this is a good idea because they love to play with each other. at first they are scared of each other but then they are best buds. good luck with your new kitty i hoped i helped you!

  3. First things first you need to shop for a vet so your kitten can get all his/her shots and be fixed.

    Dishes for water and food

    Litter box

    Kitten food

    Cat litter

    Litter scoop

    Break away collar

Name tag/rabies tag/license tag if where you live requires it

Then toys to amuse the cat

  4. First of all, congrats! Getting a kitten is very exciting.

Most of the other responders have covered the basics--these are just a few specific suggestions from my experience as a long-time multi-cat owner that haven't been mentioned yet:

The "cat dancer" is the best, and cheapest, interactive toy I've ever found--I've never met a cat, adult or kitten, who didn't love it--it's basically some rolled up brown paper on a stiff wire but they go NUTS for it.

I've found a litter called "Premium Choice" seems to work best--better than the fancy tidy cats or fresh step ones with crystals even--it's not available in all stores though--I've only found it at a local store in louisville, KY called Feeder's Supply--but it's AWESOME.

If you can set aside the time to clean a cat fountain once a week, i suggest getting one. It's hard to get cats to drink enough water--kidneys/bladder are cats weakest link, health-wise--and a fountain can really get them to drink more because they like the running water. This will backfire if you can't clean it often enough though, because then it just tastes nasty to them. If you don't do the fountain, make sure you give completely fresh water at least once a day, and clean out the water bowl at least once a week.

Don't go for the grocery store cat foods, they really are lower quality. Do some research and be willing to pay a bit more for a better food--I like "Wellness"--it costs more to feed the cat, but it will save you big time on health problems down the road.

Use catnip sparingly--cats become kind of "immune" to it with repeated exposure, so get toys without catnip in them more often than ones with catnip so that when the cat gets it it really is a special treat. Or get catnip free toys and use something like "Giddy Kitty" (a catnip spray) to spice things up once in a while.

Mostly though be sure to have lots of fun!

  5. I just got a kitten myself. This is what I got and what she likes:

litter box and litter ( I got an automatic one, but that's b/c I am lazy)

Toys (mice shaped, balls, string, little plushies, the toys on the end of sticks-to go cat fishing)

Cat food (wet food it better for cats, and they usually prefer it. My kitten only eats about one small can a day)

    Paper bags to hide in

    Scratching post

    Nail trimmers

    a cat bed

food and water bowls (or if you prefer, one of those fancy pet fountains)

    a nice carrier

The only tips I would have for you would be to just give him/her a lot of love and make sure that you appreciate him/her when he/she uses the litter box untill he is about 3 months old. . .that way they know to always use it. If it is a long-haired cat - brush it every other day and give it a bath every month. On the other hand if it's a short-haired cat then you only need to brush it like 1 time a week and give it a bath every two months. Oh and while you are brushing it or giving it a bath make sure that you say soft words. . . it just helps cats know to stay calm with it. I hope you have fun with your new kitten!!!

  7. I bought my cats at the SPCA. They're hard work but extremely fun! Make sure you give your cat a lota' love and plenty of food and water! And toys ( :

In the sources box there will be a link for the SPCA's animal shelter's website. Good luck, Have fun, and be kind to your little bundle of joy! There are breeds of all time for WARNING: You're going to find many little cuties, and it's going to be hard to choose but hang in there you'll get through it! ( :

EDIT: You can find food, litter, a litter box, toys (ex.) at the pet store. Find your local Pet Smart or Pet Co.!

  8. Good brands of kitten food that you can find at walmart: Purina One (turquoise bag), IAMS kitten food. Look for some kind of meat (not by products, meal, or fat) to be as many as the first few listed ingredients as possible, especially the first one.

Also, give your kitten some canned food once or twice a day - my kitten can usually finish a can a day this way. Fancy Feast and Friskies are good.

Don't get things from petco or petsmart when you can get them from walmart. They mark stuff up like crazy.
