Question:

Fish tank?

A while ago my friend had a hamster in a small fish tank, 5 or ten gallons, with a wire top. For some reason, recently I have been losing my fish (3 female bettas just over a year and a half old, 1 has died, and the other two are looking sick) and I'm pretty sure that soon I will be left with an empty five gallon tank. Is that big enough for a gerbil/mouse/hamster/other small rodent? Don't call my an idiot or anything, I have never owned a rodent before, and have done no research yet. I simply am wondering this, before I delve into information and try to convince my parents.

  1. I don't know about the other rodents you mentioned, but a five gallon is way too small for a hamster.  They need a lot of room to run around, so a twenty gallon long tank would be the minimum.

  2. 5  gallons would be fine just vent hte top and buy it little building thinngs or to save a buck use papertowel tubes or toilet paper tubes, it might eat them its fine it wont affect it at all

  3. It's pretty small for a rodent. You could try more fish, hermit crabs, or maybe a small lizard.

I guess a mouse could live in 5 gallons, but I don't think a hamster or gerbil would be very happy. A new 10 gallon tank is only about $10, or you might find a cheap cage or aquarium in the classifieds.

  4. well, if you have a Guinea pig in it, the tank will not be big enough. i would get a hamster. make sure the tank has air holes. e- mail me if you need any help on hamsters!

  5. In my opinion, a 5 gallon tank is far too small for any rodent. Even a lone gerbil should be kept in a 10 gallon tank. Gerbils are social, and should be kept in same s*x pairs, though.
