Whenever i hit my flat first serve, it always ends up going out or into the net. I was wondering what I should do to get it into the service boxes. I want to hit a high bouncing tennis serve, sort of like pete sampras. I was also wondering where my ball toss should be and how high it should be.

  1. i had a problem with my serve and i asked my coach about it and he said i wasn't watching the ball. alot of people look down at the service box right before contacting the ball. make sure you watch the ball the whole time.

  2. if u want to hit a high bouncing serve then try a kick or topspin serve. this will also increase the chances of the serve going in. for this serve toss the ball slightly behind your head. that way u are forced the hit up on the ball, try to brush the back of the ball to give it topspin. if you want to get ur flat serve in toss the ball so that if u let it drop it wud hit ur left foot (right foot if ur a lefty) and try to toss the ball high and hit it at the highest point that u can reach also try to hit the ball downward from this point and it shud go on. but most importantly PRACTICE alot

  3. One of the biggest misconception that most player have is that the first serve. Most club players try to score an ace but most of the time end up falling back on their second serve, or worse, losing the point in double fault.

Another big misconception is that the big first serve travels in a straight line from your racquet into the opponent's court. Mathematically speaking, you'd need to be NBA tall to achieve that. An ideal serve curves. Depending on what you're trying to achieve, the curvature varies.

Its critically important to get the first serve in. Statistics have proven that (all things being equal) players who get most of their first serves right, usually wins the match. The second serve is a defensive shot, and most opponents will step into the court to get a better angle of return.

To answer your question, to get the first serve in more often, apply spin. For flatter serves, aim down the center T as the net is lower. The ball should be tossed half a racquet head higher, from the tip of your racquet, when you're fully extended. Any higher and you'd be hitting a rather fast moving ball, when the ball descends.

As for Pete Sampras' serve, you will need to check your grip (continental, or backhand for more top spin) and toss the ball slightly behind your head.

  5. I would hit a topspin serve since that is high bouncing.   You throw it right above your head a brush up on the ball.  The toss should be high enough so that you can pause for a second and then hit it.
