Question:

Fixing this board?

I have bought new boards and never had this problem. I just bought a used board and when i took the traction pad off, some of the surface came off with it. Is there anything that I can put on the spots that came off to cover the bare board? A new traction pad will cover the spots, but I want to cover them before I put a new pad on.

  1. It would help to know what brand the board is. If the traction pad was stuck on with the normal adhesive, and you peeled the glass, you have one inferior surfboard. If you only peeled some of the gloss coat (if it has one) or only the last layer of the sanding coat, it is probably worth trying to fix. If you don't already know how to fix dings, leave it alone. Either get a pal who knows how to work with resin, or get to a shop with a good ding man. I doubt that an epoxy board would peel down like that, but I guess it could. I believe epoxy work really needs to be done in a shop.

  2. If it is a small repair you can use something like Solar Res. If it is big (more then an inch) you should buy a repair kit from your local surf shop (around 20-25$). The kit will give you directions on how to fix the ding but basically you just mix the resin and catalyst, put the cloth on the ding, let it set, then sand it down.  You should definitely fix the dings before you put your pad on. then your board will not get water-logged or delaminate.

  3. yes, 100% repair it first. Once water gets into the board through the porous tail pad, your board will be toast - fast.

Take it to someone to repair it for you. You probably pulled a lot of glass from the board and not just the piece that's missing. Getting someone to repair it correctly is important. Shouldn't be too expensive at a surf shop.
