  1. Definition of a flex fuel car

a car that does not run good on any fuel.

There are only one flex fuel station in Calif because cars running E85 do not meet Calif smog regulation.

PLUS cars in calif must meet federal mpg rules when using E85 IN CALIF.

The one allowed is being used as a test to see if the station can meet smog regulation.

Yes in calif filling station are smogged too

  2. Ethanol is grown in the midwest and has to be shipped by rail. They're not going to drag unit trains of hazmat clear over four major mountain ranges to bring it out here.

(ethanol isn't hazmat, but it is moonshine, and the BATF says they gotta denature it or pay liquor tax on it.  The denaturant is hazmat. Plus the stuff is crazy flammable.)

Flex-fuel around here is biodiesel.  Get yourself one of the cool new diesels coming out in '08, or an older one.

  3. check out the website http://www.e85refueling.com/. You can search by location to find stations that carry E85 (the high-ethanol fuel that flex-fuel vehicles can use).

Unfortunately, I did a quick search for San Francisco, CA and no public stations in the area came up.

  4. There are few flex fuel (E85, or 85% ethanol) stations available in the US.  You can look them up at:

    http://www.eere.energy.gov/afdc/fuels/et... or http://www.e85refueling.com/

Both sites show that the only public E85 station in CA is in San Diego.   There are some stations listed as planned, but it doesn't say whether or not they'll be publicly or privately available.
