Thatgamecompany’s exclusivity deal with Sony is nearing its end and it seems that the studio has no intention of extending it as they look into developing for other consoles.
The studio that brought the world titles such as flOw, Journey and Flower, all three of which are unique experiences in the gaming world and all three of which were exclusive to PlayStation.
However, it turns out that the developer had a three game exclusivity deal with Sony and with that up, the studio can now cater to other platforms as well.
Thatgamecompany has made no secret of their desire to cater to a larger market and Jenova Chen, the creative director and co-founder of the studio, teased, “Right now we are very much exploring ways to bring our games to a bigger audience, beyond just PlayStation.”
He continued, “We are still in the process of negotiating, but I hope that we can announce it (soon). But right now it’s still in the process.”
However, anyone hoping for a port of the three games mentioned earlier should brace themselves for a bit of bad news.
“FlOw, Flower, and Journey are all owned by Sony. We won’t be porting them over to iOS, Steam, other consoles, etc.” He did give one silver lining of hope though when he said, “If Sony wants to do any of that, they can.”
At the same time Mr. Chen took advantage of the moment and built up some hype for the studios next project. He teased that they were working on a new game but that everyone would have to wait for the studio to decide when they wished to spill the beans.
“We are very excited about this new game, just like with flOw, Flower, and Journey.”
All the games mentioned above are nothing like any other game players are likely to play. To put things in perspective players start off as a single petal in Flower and use the wind to collect more petals. The visuals are immersive and the gameplay mechanic
simple, yet deep.
Sony will be wondering why they did not tie the studio down for a longer deal yet the rest of the gaming world will be glad they didn’t.
