  1. Both refer to an area covered with trees; a wood resembles a forest but is a smaller tract of land, less wild in character, and generally closer to civilization.

Also, Forrest can make a hole-in-one with a wood, but Woods couldn't hit one with a forest.

  2. good question. is it size and age?

  3. Woods and  forest are interchangeable words .

  4. According to wikipedia, there IS a difference between woodlands and forest. This is one of the better definitions to show the differences:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Woodland

"For other uses, see Woodland (disambiguation).

Biologically a woodland is a treed area differentiated from a forest. In these terms, a forest has a largely-closed canopy; the branches and foliage of trees interlock overhead to provide extensive and nearly continuous shade. A woodland, on the other hand, allows sunlight to penetrate between the trees, limiting shade. Woodlands may support an understory of shrubs, herbs, or grasses. Woodlands may transition to savannas or shrublands under drier conditions".

    For forest see:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Forrest

"A forest is an area with a high density of trees (or, historically, a wooded area set aside for hunting). There are many definitions of a forest, based on various criteria [1]. "

  6. Forest is what a dog runs half way into, and a wood, (soft or hard), comes from a tree in the forest.
