Well you gotta say that Renault are now clawing their way back into the main competitors, but it would also be nice to see other new teams.

Unfortunately though, not only is a formula 1 team incredibly expensive to run, Porsche and Volkswagen say they have also been dissuaded by Max Mosleys... well.

Force India do seem to be making headway, but didn't they used to be Spyker, who used to be Midland, who used to be Jordan.

I think picking off the rubbish teams like Super Aguiri and torro rosso is a good thing because it will make the field less sparesely spread out, and honda, williams and toyota seem to be on the way up, BMW certainly proved that it is possible so I think getting rid of the rubbish teams allows the rest of the field to be more competitive. In a couple of years, it could be many different teams winning races, as opoosed to just Ferrari, BMW and McLaren now.

I think A1 Grand Prix is more popular now than F1, but I'll always keep supporting Kimi Raikkonen.  I don't agree that F1 is falling apart, but it took a knock when A1 was introduced.

It does seem so. The FIA are creating all sorts of rules which make these small teams suffer. They want to be part of F1 but there's way too much holding them back. And I completely don't agree with closing the pitlane during safety car period.

It was really exciting that there would be 12 teams in F1. Then after the announcement of certain rule changes, David Richards decided to abandon his Prodrive dream. And Super Aguri is now F1 History. STR will be put up for sale in 2010. All because of cost-cutting rules. I wonder if the changes are bringing more harm than good to the sport. And if you cut cost in one department, the teams always have to compensate by spending more in another.

i guess some of u guys don't really understand F1.. F1 IS NOT a standardized car racing series!!

its a manufactures and innovative sport! do you know how much stuff in your current road car came from F1?!?! flappy paddles, TC, DBW?? even the bloody word down force came from F1!

the reason why those weaker teams are being dropped is because they don't make their own cars, they buy them from one of the bigger teams.. Prodrive was planning to buy McLarens near winning car and enter with that.. now exactly how fair would that be for the other teams??

the main reason F1 is falling to pieces is the FIA.. they're creating new cost restriction rules but that doesn't exactly cut the cost.. it just moves the money to someplace else.. they froze engines, so the teams poured all of their cash into aero.

the only way to cut cost is to create a decent budget cap on the cars and development.. not cap the salaries of the players and engineers.. if they put a budget cap on the development, they can loosen the restrictions and let the teams get back to creating new technology that advances things.

and with mad max leaving soon theres a good chance of F1 getting better, not to mention the introduction of KERS which should improve passing by giving drivers the boost they need to pass cars ahead so they dont trail in that bad air for to long

And they are kicking out Mosley, now who will impose the cost cutting rules that annoy everyone but that allow small teams to join the sport..

I hope at least one new team joins in next year.. They should have accepted Minardi instead of Prodrive when they applied..

EDIT: Dan, I agree with you, but would Frank Williams be ok with that? I dont really understand the rules on customer cars, is it forbiden to be buy cars from another team or is it forbiden to buy any chasis?

I'm not sure if the FIA would want to introduce Dallara's Panoz etc because it would bring up comparisons with Indycar and although I think that's good, they will probably say it's not good for F1's reputation as the pinacle of motorsport. I really think the cost cap policy has to be implemented as soon as possible. And please FIA, let Mosley finish that one, just that one step and then he can go!

The huge amounts of money in this sport has been just one of the things which has kept it from evolving. There are some serious questions to be asked about direction and What the constituent parts of teams need to be about.

At the end of the day, F1 is tough. Since I've started watching (just over 10 years), there's been some great, (some race winning) teams going out with a whimper: Tyrrell, Jordan, Minardi, Prost etc.

It's all about the money. It's a shame, as I think a lot of people embrace the 'go for the underdog' philosophy. Smaller teams have always suffered, but, like other sports, its now more about money then ever before.

I think all these recent rule changes will also discourage new teams from joining F1.  Maybe Mallaya can purchase STR before those new rules take effect in 2010.

I am a F1 fan for 30 of my forty years and have just returned from the Spanish G.P. and it was still a fantastic experience!

While I agree it has become like football, a group of very overpaid talented people!

The fact is that multi-national companies pay relatively little money to advertise to a global audience. How much would it cost a company like Red Bull to advertise on T.V. for 18 weekends a year, over 3 days, 2 Hours a day to an audience of 500 million+?????

It is far cheaper to give an F.1. team £200 million a year if that is as much as it costs, either way it's a bargain!

F.1. is all about money but when I was stood 30 meters from 22 screaming car engines, everything just faded away into a feeling of complete ecstasy and long live F.1.

It feels like it... The FIA needs to introduce measures that attract  racing teams as well as car manufacturers to the championship... Firstly by slashing the cost of putting a name on the list... for all the awful teams we saw in the 90's... the cost of setting up a team (and in some cases... Larrousse, Jordan, the rise of Benetton.. were run well) was so much easier... they had tech support from engine suppliers... but they were racing teams first and foremost.. now we have Williams and Force India... neither will win races...

I don't understand what is making things so much more expensive than then... the technology used in the early 90's was as high, if not higher than now...

Here's an idea...

Perhaps the FIA could do a deal with chassis constructors (Dallara, Lola, Panoz) to produce a range of stock chassis that are up to F1 standard... for use by teams that are just starting out... They would have to develop the car themselves and eventually build their own, or do their own deal with the chassis manufacturers... A similar situation could be done with engine manufacturers (Judd, Zytek, Ford) to produce cheap customer engines... again that are developed in conjunction with the teams who buy them...

This could entice names from other areas of motorsport.. such as Ganassi, Penske and AGR from Indycar, Courage, Pescarolo, Peugeot and Audi from sportscar racing, teams from GP2 (ART Gp, Carlin Motorsport)... or other car manufacturers like Hyundai, Proton (could revive the Lotus name...), Volkswagen group, GM, Ford, Nissan (has ties with Renault)... Aston Martin (through Prodrive)... Mazda..

Bring back some old names... Minardi.. Jordan.. Maybe Herr Schumacher could use some of his hard-earned cash to give a team a go...

All these names... and the FIA at the moment can't draw any of them in... why is that!?!?!?

The FIA need to make F1 as accessible and viable an investment project as other series are... They seem to be making it as exclusive as possible..

super aguri were simply set up to avoid backlash against Honda in Japan when sato lost his drive, super aguri however were never really distanced that far from Honda so i can see Honda stepping in to save them

torro rosso- hmmm i have an inkling that DIC may well buy them, they have been trying to get into f1 for many years now and they were behing the super aguri rescue bid, thaty they pulled out of (just after maestritch annouced he would consider selling torro rosso, and which team would you rather buy)

prodrive were lied to in essence by max they were promised they were going to be allowed to run custiomer cars but then that changed and therer isnt the money for them to become a constructor

as for force india they will stay in f1 for many many yerars i beleive, and there are many companies in india that will want to be involved with them espcailly next year with the indian gp as well

williams, are the only team apart from ferrari and mclaren that are doing well, whos sole intention of being in f1 is being in f1 and not as a marketing ploy, oh and dont worry about their finances, yes they wouldnt refuse more money but there not excatly near supeer aguri teriory or jordan, minardi, arrows, prost etc

next year is a freh start cant weait
