Question:

Foster children and therapy after adoption?

I will ask our resource manager when we meet her but in the meantime. We are fostering to adopt. We were told in training that many foster kids are in therapy because of the abuse they have subejected to. While in care the state pays for all medical and therapy. They said in special cases they will continue to pay for therapy after the adoption. My question is what would be a special case? I thought after adoption the AP takes over medical for the child.

(FYI I have no issue taking over medical. I have insurance that does cover therapy. This is a curiosity question)

  1. In my state, the child still receives Medicaid and therapy is covered for adopted children through foster care.

Most of my parents cover the child first on their insurance and then use Medicaid secondary.

    I'm a foster care/special needs adoption specialist.

  2. Most Children adopted from foster care will get Medicaid until they are 18 and in some cases 21. You may add them to your health insurance as soon as they are placed as Pre-Adopt. There is a federal law to allow this and you may have to push it because it doesn't happen all the time.

Some children are classified as "Special Needs" when they are they will recieve additional funding. Our daughter was and she has several special needs. A special case is defined as a Special Needs and each state sets their standard of classification. Often older childre, sibling groups, or minority children are automatic Special Needs.

  3. They would depend on the resource manager and the therpist for the child. It may be they want him to stay with the same therpist and your insurance won't cover that one or something

  4. my adopted child is covered by the state (medicaid) they cover her mental health needs

  5. Most cases the child is on some sort of Medicare that pays for the therapy.  I have adopted and we kept the Medicare that continued to pay for the therapy.

  6. where I live Special Needs children are still entitled to services (and a monthly stipend) after adoption until they are 18 years old.

  7. My cousin, got raped by this guy called Grant , she told my aunt and she didn't believe her , and my aunt had enough of her so she got adopted and now shes in a mental hospital - By the way this is a true story.
