  1. Free Verse allows the writer to write in a style that is non-traditional and id forgiving in presentation. Poetry is an expression of thought transformed. Unlike writing a novel, Poetry allow the story be told without narrative. I wrote I will wait as a challenge to tel the story of the birth of Jesus through the eys of an uninvolved observer. Since I know the story, I use free verse to take libert of the facts and who knows, maybe Matthew was there. The idea is to make the reader think and question what is truth and what is fiction.

Good luck in your quest. I am sure you will do well.

    Mac McGovern

    I Will Wait

I sat back against the trunk of the tree, satisfied the

Roman’s would be content with the proceeds of the taxes

    I had collected.

Stretching,  I survey my surroundings and notice a nearby

town full of people there to register for the census.

I smile in anticipation of my purses increase as a result.

In the vast fields, surrounding the town,

    shepherds lazily tend their flock.

A tall man leading a donkey, with a beautiful young lady

sitting upon its back, stops and enters a small stable.

I began to wonder why, when I look up and see a star,

never seen before this night, so bright it had a calming

effect as it focused onto the stable.

Men, dressed in robes of gold and silver, appear as in a vision,

inundated in a radiance that comes from within,

begin singing soft, heavenly melody that echoed

    throughout the valley.

As I listened, the sudden cry of a newborn child startled me.

One of the strangers at the stable beckoned me saying,

    come and behold.

Caution, my constant companion, was overcome by an urge

    I could not resist.

I approached, the man who had earlier been leading the

    donkey came forward and said,

"Welcome, I am Joseph, this is my wife Mary and our son Jesus".

I looked at Jesus lying in an old manger, and knew

    my life would somehow change.

The stable residents, ox, donkey, sheep, and geese all

were silent as if they knew this child was special.

Shepard’s, with their flock, began to gather around the

stable and they too became quiet in reverence to the baby Jesus.

Then came three men on camels who paid homage to the child

    with offerings of some value.

Warning Joseph and Mary that danger loomed close,

they departed to return to their own land.

I wondered at the activity and attention being brought

over the birth of a carpenter’s son.

As if hearing my thoughts, Mary begged I approach

    and take his hand.

I reached presumptuous, he raised his arm and grasped

my finger with his hand, holding tight.

    A voice inside me said,

    "You will be free,

    you will not sin again".

"You will start your life anew, when it is my time,

you will remember this day and come to me again".

    I turned and did not look back;

I would wait for his time to come.

Until then, I had taxes to collect.

  3. sorry i can't give you any poems, but here are some pointers to may be help you start :

think back to the time when your sister was born - before & after.

how did You feel, how did the family feel, were you all waiting eagerly? did you know it was going to be a girl?

how did you select a name for her?

how did you decorate her room?

what changes did you have to make in your life becoz of her?

    did you like those changes?

did she cry too much or was she a bonny baby?

did your parents have sleepless nights or did you help around with some chores?

these are very practical-type questions. you can embellish your poem with your own imagination & creativity. you can convert a single event about the beirth that stands out in your memory into a free verse poem.

for the 2nd poem, think of anything you intensely like or dislike or something totally fantastic. you can choose a human being, pets, birds, Nature, God, society, relationships, plants, garden, toys, school, etc. etc. as the subject.

first, just randomly jot down whatever comes to your mind about each subject.  then see which one seems the best to move forward on ...

    all the best

  4. One of the classic kinds of poems about a newborn is to write a poem to the new baby, welcoming them to the world and telling them something about the world or about yourself. Is there anything about you or what did as a baby that you'd like your little sister to know?

On the other hand, here's another take:
