  1. One of two things first a piece of plactic could have fallen on the defrost heater and you smell that, next if you have a I/M like Whirlpool, Kitchen Aid, Remove the front white plastic cover and smell the inside a gear in the I/M can burn up and give you a nice smell!

  2. the coolant may have become low, witch makes the motor run longer to maintain coldness needed. if your freezer is over 10 years old replace it if it is new call a service man. have a nice day

  3. It has been known for these things to overheat and cause fires so my advise is turn it off straight away and call in an expert

  4. I agree with a/c tech, both answers.

Those modules on the whirlpool icemakers (used in many other brands too) stink like crazy when they burn out. I carry plastic grocery bags in the truck to put them in after I replace them because they stink so bad they can stink up the truck.

I bet your icemaker has stopped making ice.
