  1. You might have over worked the compressor.Try unplugging it and plugging it back in again. The compressor may be off completely. ***UNPLUG BEFORE TRYING THIS**** Most compressors and electric motors have a reset switch on them.Locate it under the unit and press the reset switch. The switch is a safety feature that trips so the compressor does'nt burn out.

  2. By leaving the door open, you caused the box to ice up. This caused ice to form around and near the evaporator fan. The fan is most likely hitting the ice, causing the noise. Defrost the box, and I think you will be OK.

  3. By leaving the door open, you probably caused the compressor to overwork itself, and in an old freezer, that would probably cause damage simply because the moving parts were worn to begin with.  There's not much you can do by yourself except call a repair shop and ask them what you can do until your parents get home.

  4. Since the noise is continuous I think Plumber Rock has it right. It is ice on the fan making noise.

Good news is that it will go away once it goes through a defrost which it will do by itself. It will also stop making noise when it turns off once it gets down to temperature.

Don't worry. You didn't break it.

I do have a "possible" cure for you. The most popular freezers these days use an electronic control. If you can unplug it, wait a minute, then plug it in again most of the time with those it will trigger a defrost cycle. It will stay off for about 30 minutes to defrost and when it starts again the noise should be gone.

If it is an old one or a different type it will just come back on when you plug it back in. Then unplugging it didn't help, but it didn't hurt it either.

Or you can leave it alone and it will go away by itself eventually.

    Good Luck.
