  1. This is tough.  The details are slim and I'm curious what made you think it was an 'ocean going ship'?  That could be the missing clue.

Typically ships that voyage between other nations only have the country of registry beneath the name.  Vessels that transient within a country or say between Canada and the U.S. will normally have the port and State or province.  If you did not recognize the name and it is a vessel of international commerce, you probably saw a country name of two words, like San Salvador.

These days the flag of a vessel does not necessarily correspond with the nationality of the owner.  Many are registered in Monrovia, Liberia or Panama to enjoy lower tax and less stringent rules.

If you saw the name astern, the country of registration's flag would have been on the taffrail just above it.  You may recognize the flag if you view a website of international maritime flags.

Now please answer my question.  How did you get to nena s question regarding runnin out of beer.

  2. the name 'OLYMPIC anything' typically would probably have a Greek owner, in my eyes.  the writing may have been in the Greek alphabet.  was the stack blue in color?  typically Greek ships (with Greek owners) have a blue stack.  The crew could be from anywhere.  Ocean going ships do indeed look a bit different from the lake ships.
