Freshman volleyball tryouts help?

I haven't really played all that much, just a few times in middle school PE, but my dad(who was a college player) has helped me abit this summer on serving and hitting. I am 5' 10". What do they judge you on during tryouts? Is there anything I can do to improve more? anything else would be great too! Thanks!

  1. they def. judge you on your work ethic. so always be moving. dont be lazy. and as a freshman impress them by being a step ahead. learn swinging to the hitters and left, right-left jump for hitting. and have your dad show you good form and be agressive and call everything. and dive. coaches love to see effort. good luck

  2. Really focus on your overhand serve.

It's bound to win your coaches over.

But I'd also work on your vocals,

I'm trying out this year too & I'm not very loud

But I do drills that help me feel more comfortable with my voice when you call things like "got it!" or "middle!"

& i'd do some speed jumproping.

It sortof gives you the same feeling of running,

    it's almost equally difficult.

try that for endurance & agility

  3. your dad probably helps you out with a lot of the physical stuff so, here, ive noted some easy stuff to do that coaches like to see.

go for the ball. if you're a natural athlete, it should come..well, naturally, but lots of people who are new to volleyball aren't aggressive and thats how you can tell the good players from the beginners

    call the ball...LOUDLY

hustle during waterbreaks and hustle to shag your ball, coaches like to see effort

have a positive attitude - give your teammates high fives during scrimmages whether someone messed up or if someone had a good kill [etc...] also if you mess up, just shake it off and try again. when you beat yourself up, it negatively affects your teammates.

have fun...i know it can sound stupid but coaches want to see passion, they want you to WANT to play volleyball. It reallly is simple but lots of people end up having no fun because they're so nervous. PLAY because you WANT TO PLAY. it'll make tryouts a heck of a lot easier, I promise.

work on agility, jumps [because you're tall, they'll want to see some height on your jumps], passing [good serve-receive = good results] and since you havent really played volleyball, i would recommend you start spending as much time with it as possible. once you get used to the way the ball moves, your timing for hitting and jump serving, even passing and blocking will be greatly improved.

    good luck at tryouts x3
