Fridge freezer upright

my 12 year old fridge freezer does not seem to be cutting in and out. The top fridge seems warm but the freezer still has ice (could just be taking a time to defrost). I turned it off and on again and the motor started but now seems not to be cutting in and out again. Any ideas please do they both work off the one motor?
