Fridge intermittently bangs like very loud...

Our 9 year old fridge/freezer stated giving very loud bangs like a cork popping or a shot, at irregular intervals. No smell, no blackening round the plug or socket and worked perfectly. As the noise got so frightening we bought a new fridge freezer and after a few weeks it has started doing the same. Any ideas?
