If so, then what are they really? Stand-ins that are molded to keep you from jumping? Or people who are alive to keep you smiling?

Yes there are real things as friends and companions just ask your neigborhood dog.

They're completely real.  It has nothing to do with society, but rather the human desire to not be alone.  People befriend other people so that they're not alone in their lives, and they have someone to compare and relate their problems to.
