I just got a couple of gerbils. As well as the dried foor for them I want to be giving them fruit and veg as an extra. Is there anything they can't have and is there anything they are likly to love? I already gave them grapes and raisins which they liked but they didn't touch the carrotts I put in for them.

  1. here's some: Sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds and peanuts are favourites of most gerbils, too many sunflower seeds may result in illness though. They also enjoy fruit peels such as orange and banana. In fact, gerbils will eat almost anything; dog biscuits and chews; rat food; rabbit food; guinea pig food; oats. They might also enjoy celery or apple.

Don't feed them too many foods with a lot of moisture because, it may upset the gerbils stomach.

    good luck !

  2. I've had gerbils and i fed them

    apple

    cucumber

    pepper

    pear

    grapes

    carrot

and i gave them things like banana as a mega treat

  3. you can give gerbils, apple, you could try melon, with the skin left on, obviously you will need to check on if they eat it or not to remove it from their cage, before they burrow it, thats the only thing with gerbils.  You probably have already, but they adore "Hay", they strip it right down, and chinchilla sand, fill up a ceramic bowl, and they will roll in it!!

  4. I know that it is okay to give gerbils apple and cucumber

  5. 10% of rodents diets are table scraps so u can feed them any fruits and veggies meat chesse and anything of the sort

  6. apples

    anything butonions or oranges

  7. mine aren't a big fan of carrots either. Mine love lettuce! i also give them sliced bananas sometimes. Also pinches of whole wheat bread. do NOT give them white bread though.

  8. mine don't like carrots too.

I've heard lettuce is bad for them so you shouldn't give them that.

Mine like sweetcorn, dry spaghetti, grapes, raisins, cauliflower, brocolli, shredded wheat and i've heard you can give them hard boiled egg but mine didn't like it.

Don't go mad with it though. A bit of fruit or veg is good for them, but not every day or it could do more harm than good. I give mine some about once a week for a treat, in small quantities.

    Hope they enjoy their treats!

  9. give them .... and fruits or veggies....and also the food you buy at the pet store

  10. Just like humans, each Gerbils prefers different food. You can try giving them all types of fruit but stay well clear from any citrus fruits i.e Lemon, Lime etc.

Many veggies are suitable for Gerbils but many other types of food are great to give them as treats. Below are a list of food that I give my Gerbbies as a treat!

    Apple – dried or fresh

    Carrot

    Banana – dried or fresh

    Cucumber

    Dried bread

Cheese (very small doses and as a treat!)

    Cooked pasta/rice

    Grapes

    Tomato

Cereals (low sugar, so shredded wheat is ok, all bran, porridge)

    Wild birdseed

    Dandelion leaves

Grass (make sure no toxins on it)

Dried Dog biscuits - for extra protein and variety in their food

    Millet seeds

    Walnuts

    Hazelnuts

    Almonds

    Broccoli

Note: only feed in moderation, as with humans, a balanced diet is best.

    Hope this helps!
