Fta receiver with a mini dish?

those expensive fta receivers that come with a mini dish what do they do? why does it have a mini dish with it? with that mini dish will it be nessary to install recent softwares on ur reciver or what?

the fta recievers need the dish, its the 'antenna' for the channels.. the box just decodes the signal stream so your tv can use the signal. They are expensive because no one is subsidizing them unlike directv or dish network pay tv services. there is no software to update on the boxes. just point the dishes at a satelite with an unencryted stream, and you will see those channels.
