Full Ride?

Question

This may seem silly, but how exactly do you get a full ride to a college? Do you just try to get as many scholarships as possible, or does the school actually give it to you?

I'm asking because I want to go to the College of Charleston (in South Carolina) but I live in Pittsburgh, so the travel money would just kill us. Thanks for the help!

It can be either one, the other, or even both.  Typically though, most schools do give out a limited number of scholarships that cover all tuition.  I would recommend going to their website and looking at the financial aid section.  If the website is not clear enough, there should be a phone number and you can call and talk to a financial aid person at the college.  Good luck.

Usually the free-ride scholarships are determined through the admissions process, so you are most likely to get good answers about how to qualify from an admissions counselor.  Find out what the school is looking for in a candidate.  GPA and academic achievements are usually one of the top qualifiers, but depending on the school there may be others.  

Most private schools have a full scholarship program that is given out on a very limited basis (unless you have ivy league school money).  The competition for these free-rides is usually very high.
