Adam, Beth, and Cedric, working together, can paint a room in 6 hours less than the time it takes Adam alone, one hour less that it takes Beth working alone, and one half the time it takes Cedric working alone. How long would it take Adam and Beth to paint the room if they work without Cedric?

  1. A = Adam = x + 6

    B = Beth = x + 1

    C = Cedric = 2(x)

    Substitute 10 hours for x.

    A can paint in 16 hours.

    B can paint in 11 hours.

    C can paint in 20 hours.

    A and B, therefore, can paint at a rate of 16 + 11 / 2 hours for every ten hours the three would work together. If H equals time the three spend painting, and W equals time spent by A and B then:

    H works at a 10:13.5 rate compared to W.

    Hope that wasn't too heady.  Sorry if it was...

  2. 24 hours because 6 times 4 equals 24 duhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh...
