Alright summer is here and the heat is turned off at the wall but yet when I go in the basement the unit is running all the time. We dont have central air but the heat vents are blowing out "some cool" air. What is going on? I know the unit is very old and needs to be replaced but I dont have the funds for that. Is there a way to make it stop running until I need it again in the winter? Cheap fix so to speak?

  1. It sounds like a thermostat problem, or possibly a relay that is stuck in the closed position.  If you can find the blower motor there are two wires going to it.  Removing either one of the wires will disable the motor.  This is IMPORTANT be sure the power is off before you do this.  Wrap the wire with electrical tape, and  your set until you need the blower next winter, but at that time you will probably need to have it serviced.   If there is a breaker, or fuse that is used solely for the furnace simply turn it off.

  2. Turn the breaker off to make sure it wont run.Sounds like a stuck relay, wiring,or a t-stat problem.Hard to say how much it will cost to fix.My guess is less than 300$.Good Luck.Make sure you get someone to have a peak at it before you really need it.
