It should split up into two companies:  one that runs the operating system (i.e., Windows) side of the business, and the other that does everything else.  The problem Microsoft has is that it is trying to compete with itself as much as it competes with anyone else.  It can't become a big player on the Internet without impairing the future of the PC.  The Internet reduces the need for a PC in many respects, and Microsoft can't really charge into the Internet without potentially reducing the market for Windows and its successors.  By splitting into two companies, Microsoft would end this internal conflict, and its shareholders could profit from both businesses.
