Gambling Statement?

Question

I got told that a person who is labelled a 'gambler' only does it for the thrill of winning and not so much for the money.

Is this true, becuase i was wondering if i had a gambling problem because i only get money from the dole, and have been unsuccessful to find work.

So i take about 20% of my dole check and gamble it on roulette in very small variations. sometimes i am lucky and sometimes i am not.

Is this statement true?

The problem is that in the long term you will ALWAYS lose at roulette.  So you are taking your welfare check and squandering 20% of it on a game you cannot win.

Perhaps if you took the same amount of time and money and invested it in looking for a job, you'd be better off.  Being unemployed is entirely the choice of the person out of work 95% of the time.

a lot of people can be called "gamblers" even though they don't play games of chance. many stockbrokers, for example, or inventors, or entrepreneurs.

however, if you are thinking about people who have a "gambling problem," that's a different story. no, you don't sound like one of them.

Then you're not a "gambler" per say. I used to work at an underground casino and I can see the difference between people who will set a limit and walk away when everything is gone and the people who rationalize blowing $1,600 in three hours and still spend their gas money just to "win it back"

You know you're an gambling addict when that happens. And also, many of them claim that it's an adrenaline rush. I personally quit because I could not stand watching these people throw away their lives.

Anyway, keep gambling but stop as soon as you see yourself getting irrational.

As long as you have it under control and don't bet or lose more than you can afford, then you are most likely not a PROBLEM gambler. I believe that a PROBLEM gambler is one who continually MUST seek the thrill of the win, even against great odds, and even at extreme personal loss. They seldom can just stop when they hit their limit, but keep on seeking the win until they have little or nothing left.

And you may want to consider a different game, since over time you cannot beat the house odds on roulette.

If you are on the dole, then you have time to study other gaming options, such as Blackjack and Poker, or sports betting, where skill can be a big factor in winning money.

Don't rely on luck in the face of casino odds - you cannot beat the house in the long run!
