  1. Its all luck.  Mathematically all bets placed have the same odds, and they all result in a small casino edge.  If you placed a bet on all red numbers, it would work out to the same odds as just betting on red, etc.

The reason the odds are against you is because the casino has 2 extra chances to win:  the 0 and the 00.

for example odds of hitting an exact number are 1 in 38, but if you hit your number you get paid 35 to 1

and if you bet on red, you have a 18 out of 38 chance (47%) of hitting, but they pay you even money so you are losing 3% on average each time.

Its a losing game, but its fun.  Over the long run though, you will lose.

  2. Roulette is all luck.  The casino makes money by shorting you on each payout.  There are 38 numbers but you win 35:1 on a hit so the extra 2 bets on average go to the house.  This translates into about a 5-6% gain.

  3. All luck. Roulette is impossible to beat long term.

The only possible way to beat roulette would be to find a bias wheel. Not going to happen given how often casinos check these things.

  4. It's all luck. =p

  5. There are people with systems for roulette.  They often believe that they are good systems.   Most systems will produce small profits for a while, but result in a large loss occasionally.  There is no system that can consistently beat a roulette game if it is dealt properly and fairly.

That said, there are systems that generate a small win for a while and provide deceptively profitable results.

Roulette systems have led to more suicides than any other casino game.

  6. I actually do make money playing roulette - not much money, but it is a challenge and I have a method that gives me a small profit.

Unlike Andrew M above, I play in England where there is only one zero on the wheels; I wouldn't even consider playing on a table that has two zeros.   And in Europe, when zero comes in, all even chance bets (odd, even, black, red, high, low) have half of their stake returned, giving the house a 1.35% advantage, which can be overcome, but only fractionally as far as my method is concerned.

I take, on average, approximately 19 steps back and 20 steps forward, therefore making a profit of about one unit in 39 staked.

It is slow and steady and can be boring, but interesting and satisfying.
