Question:

Garage door opener light relay failure?

Occasionally, the light will not shut off on my Genie garage door opener.

The door does work with both the remote and wired wall switch.

The light does come on any time you operate the door opener.

Shortly after the door is closed, the light should go off. I hear the relay click, and sometimes the light goes out.

Other times, I wait, I hear the relay click, but the light stays on.

I hit the light switch on the wired wall switch. I hear the relay click to turn back on the light. I hit the switch again, and I hear the relay unit click, and the light goes out.

It is pretty random, but about 1/4 of the time, the relay clicks and the light fails to go out.

I suspect that the relay is intermittently hanging up and failing to open the light circuit.

Can I get to the relay if I remove the back cover (after removing power)?

Would the relay be something that I can clean or lube or anything?

Or is there some other potential source of failure that I am overlooking?

I can solder if needed.

  1. unless this is a very old unit, the relay is built into a circuit board. the only fix is to replace the board unfortunately.
