  1. Boycott the major companies, Exxon,  Mobil. The larger companies set the price for fuel.  When EVERYONE stops buying their gas, they will have to lower the price in order to compete with the smaller companies.

  2. A gas boycott would never work.  If people were willing to stop driving and start walking/bicycling/whatever, or give alternative fuels like hydrogen cells a chance, then there wouldn't be a need for gasoline in the first place.   Besides, a great deal of the things you take for granted are transported on  vehicles that run on gasoline, so it doesn't sound too hopeful unfortunately.

Sliteofhand: If you stopped driving and started bicycling, then that IS boycotting ;)  But I do agree with you.  Bikes are the way to go, in circumstances where you are able to.

  3. Gas boycotts won't work.

It might work if the gas only came from one supplier.  When I worked at gas stations, they would get gas from whoever they could...meaning that the Valero and the Exxon might be selling gas from the same refinery, just with their own additives put into it.  So whatever the refinery is charging will determine how much the gas stations charge for the gas, and boycotting one brand of gas station won't make a difference.

If we all made a real effort to use less gas, that might help with gas prices.  Try running all of your errands on one day, using the car without the air conditioning, carpooling to work, walking to the store if it's a reasonable distance, etc...The only thing that my family's car is used for is for my husband to get to and from work, and then we go grocery shopping once a week.  Other than that, we walk where we need to go (it helps that the school and library and stores are all within walking distance).

  4. Don't boycott; be an example.  Get a bicycle and be seen; and save in the long run.  all a boycott will do is disrupt the sellers cash flow and p*** you off because you are only doing something temporary.

  5. I boycott would only work if it done for a long period of time, such as 6 months to a year.

  6. They don't work because if everyone stopped buying gas for one day... everyone would fill up the day before or after.  The companies still make the same.   people are not willing to give up driving all together.  and it would take people driving less and less over a period of time to cause such a less demand for gas that it goes down.

  7. If it means people use less it would work. Using less is one of the few things that would work. If you mean, for example, nobody buys gas on Wednesday, then people will just fill their tanks on Tuesday or Thursday. It might make the gas cheaper on Wednesday for those who ignore the boycott, and more expensive on Tuesday and Thursday, but it wouldn't do anything else.

  8. No, they don't work.

In short: you are not changing the overall relationship of supply and demand - so price will not change.

    See my article here: http://www.gmilburn.ca/2008/05/14/oil-st...

  9. Under our current leadership a boycott would not help, at least not the in the long run...  If you wanted to see a drop of maybe .10 per gallon for a very short period of time everyone could boycott the major companies, Exxon, Mobil. The larger companies set the price for fuel.  IF everyone stopped  buying their gas, they would have to lower the price in order to compete with the smaller companies...

But this is not the solution.  While I agree that the American oil companies are indeed involved in price gouging, we cannot forget the role of our government or the laws of supply and demand.  President Bush is refusing to stop stockpiling foreign oil at a rate of 70,000 gallons per day... Yeah, that definitely is going to have some effect on the supply and demand..   Congress has the ability to audit and regulate prices with US oil companies... but refuses to do so..

The only true way to free ourselves of these outrageous gas prices is to stop using gas.  Unfortunately the oil companies knows that this is where we are headed, thus we have the price gouging..

Here is what I am personally doing and my 3 year plan..  I have absolutely cut out all unnessary driving, I have started driving the actual posted speed limit (that one is still torture.)

I am also cutting out most -not all- items from what I view to be my frivolous budget.  I have gone from the full blown cable package down to the expanded HD tier (this saves about 20.00 per month) I have dropped down to the lowest data package on my broadband services (this saves about 15.00 per month)  I have completely eliminated my home phone service and rely strictly on my cell phone (this saves about 30.00 per month) I have cancelled my 20.00 a month subscription to netflix and now go to mcdonalds on the way to or from work to pick up one of their $1.00 new releases (if the urge to watcha movie is too much for me to fight) that is the only thing I buy at mcdonalds...

I am on the waiting list with aptera motors so that when their 300mpg vehicle is finally offered in my state I will be one of the first to have it.   I have also placed a deposit with zpm so that I will have one of the first 10,000 OneCats to be sold in the united states.  Once I have the OneCat my use of gasoline will all but disappear.

  10. No. Will never work.

It's a supply and demand issue.

We demand it, and they decide how much of it they will supply!

  11. Well think about this.

It is not the local gas stations fault who you would be boycotting.

If you live in a city with public transport take it instead. Or if you are one of these lucky people with money sitting in the bank buy one of those hybrid AMERICAN cars.

It is very hard to do these days but try and buy American products. This will make the US dollar worth more (well this is the theory. America has been sold off piece by piece to other countries).

Try and do the little things and it might ketch on.....
