After the Second World War, Germany was divided into two parts, west and east. What are the names of these parts? (What does FRG and GRD stand for?) And what were the official names of West and East Germany in German? (Initials are BRD and DDR).

What was the capital of West Germany and East Germany? And what kind of government controlled East Germany?

Please help. Thanks in advance.

  1. Guess i'll do your research lol

    FRG = Fedral Republic of Germany (west germany)

    GDR = German Democratic Republic (east germany) (socialist government)

    BRD = Bundesrepblik Deutschland (in english "Peoples Reblic of Germany) (west germany)

    DDR = Deutsche Demokratische Republik ( German Democratic Republic) (east germany socialist)

    Capital of west germany was Bonn

    Capital of east was Berlin

    Berlin is current capital

  2. FRG (West Germany) = Federal Republic of Germany (BRD)

    GDR (East Germany) = German Democratic Republic (DDR)

    BRD = Bundesrepublik Deutschland

    DDR = Deutsche Demokratische Republik

    The capital of the FRG was Bonn, the capital of the GDR was Berlin (the Eastern part)

  3. BRD = Bundes Republik Deutschland - West Germany

    DDR = Deutsche Demokratische Republik - East Germany

    FRG = Federal Republic of Germany = BRD

    GDR= German Democratic Republic = DDR

    East Germany was a communistic state

  4. FRG is the Federal Republic of Germany (BRD, "Bundesrepublik Deutschland"), the former western part, also known as "West Germany", formed out of the French, British and American occupation zones.

    GDR is the German Democratic Republic ("Deutsche Demokratische Republik"), the former eastern part, also known as "East Germany", formed out of the Russian (then: Soviet) occupation zone.

    The capital of Germany has always been Berlin. Search on the internet for information about the Marshall plan, the German airlift, or John F. Kennedy's legendary "Ich bin ein Berliner" speech. Berlin was divided, after WWII, into 4 occupation zones, of which the Russians kept one (and had a wall built); but even though West-Berlin was within GDR territory, it was never given up by West Germany.

    As the GDR had opted to take East Berlin as their capital, and to avoid diplomatic trouble (and possibly a third world war), the West German government and the allies decided to install a temporary capital in Bonn, in the Rhineland, the far West of the republic. Bonn was the West German capital during the times of the cold war, but after reunification, it was shifted to Berlin, which nowadays is the capital of re-united Germany.

    East Germany had a socialist regime under a unified socialist party, the SED (Sozialistische Einheitspartei Deutschlands). Although allegedly democratically elected, they always made up for 98% of the votes. [I'm from the West, I can't tell much about what really happened in the east, besides of tell-tale stories.]

    West Germany had two big parties, the conservative CDU (Christlich Demokratische Union), and the more socialist SPD (Sozialdemokratische Partei Deutschlands). As a comparison: The CDU was something like the British Tories, and the SPD something like the British Labour, before Tony Blair. West Germany's electoral system (and nowadays whole Germany's) is one of "direct election": Every citizen has his vote for a party, NOT a specific candidate. (I'm talking about federal elections now.) The chancellor (comparable in power to a US president) is not directly elected, but listed by the party. There would be much to tell about the German electoral system; but you may be able to find that out on Wikipedia or something like that, as well as information about the parties I mentioned.

    btw, bob and penguin gave you good answers. I just thought I might get into a little more detail, but I'm not sure if I succeeded.

  5. All of the answers you received so far were perfect. Something else that goes hand-in-hand with this topic is foreign occupancy. There were four countries that "occupied east and west germany: US, Russia, France, and England. There are maps available that detail the occupancy zones.

  6. Okay, so:

    The capital of West Germany was Bonn, and the capital of East Germany (and is the capital of the entire country today) was Berlin.

    East Germany was controlled by a socialist government.

    GDR : German Democratic Republic (Which was East Germany, in the Socialist government.)

    FRG : Federal Republic of Germany (Which was West Germany.)

    BRD : Bundesrepublik Deutschland (Which was West Germany.)

    DDR : Deutsche Demokratische Republik (German Democratic Republic, again, East Germany in the socialist government.)
