Getting Logbook details changed?

Question

I just bought a new car from a guy who now turns out to be a bit of a rip off merchant. We both signed the logbook for my new car etc, and I have the little slip that you get whilst waiting for the new log book to come through.

So, my first question is, what happens if he never posts it off? Do I contact the DVLA?

Also, he took my old car and it took him a while to sign the logbook, but eventually did today. the only problem is, he didnt put his name on it. I have the address on it, so what should I do?

Make a fake name? or just send it off with no name? (If I phone him, I know he isn't going to give me his name as he promised me 2 weeks ago he'd take out and return the stereo from my old car, which he never has - why I don't know, as its unusable as I have the front and the cd changer...)

I don't want to keep the logbook unsent because he's probably going through red lights and allsorts. Will the DVLA transfer ownership with no name?

Call the DVLA and explain, they will get his name from the other car, if it was his !!  Failing that just invent one,suggest mike mouse.

It's not a problem at all.  Firstly, if you are not sure that he is going to send off the log book for your new car, just get a form V62 (application for a registration document) from the post office and send it to Swansea with your V5C/2 (green slip).  You don't have to pay anything and it will generate a log book in your name.

As far as the V5C log book for you old vehicle is concerned, send it to Swansea as it is, doesn't matter if you don't have his name.  The most important thing is that you notify disposal asap.  Once you receive the letter from DVLA stating that they have removed your details as the registered keeper you know that you are no longer legally responsible for the vehicle.

Q1 no you don't if he doesn't send his part away he will still be the registered keeper so is liable for all speeding, parking or other fines incurred till he does, but i'd give him ample time to do it (e.g 60 days) then contact D.V.L.A                                                                      Q2 Give him a call to get his name if  you can't get it phone D.V.L.A and explain to them what has happened and give them the details you have of the guy just to make sure it comes out of your ownership

no the DVLA need all the details. It sound like you have been conned, if i where you i would call the DVLA for advice and possibly the police as this could be a case of fraud.

Do this ASAP because anything he does in your old car you are responsible for if the logbook hasn't been changed.

In the case of your new car, you can use the green slip to send off for a replacement logbook at no cost.

to download a V62 certificate - Fill it in (you'll need the chassis number off your car) and send it with your green bit. They'll then send you a new logbook.

As for your old car, if you have the address, fill in this chap's details, make up a name (A.Smith will do), and send the blue part off. This notifies the DVLA that the vehicle is no longer your responsibility.

When the new logbook turns up at the bloke's house with the wrong name, it's up to him to correct it with the DVLA.

At least by doing these things, your bit's taken care of.
