Getting a tip replacement?

Is it possible to take off a glued on tip and glue on a better tip like a "tiger". what do you do cut it off. how much would it cost?

Tip changes are not something you want to do yourself, if you don't know what you're doing.  I do them prices vary depending on the tip, Lepro and Elk Master $10, and it goes all the way up to over $20 for Moori.  I've had people come in and say "I've tried putting my tip on and it won't stay straight"  Well that's why we use over sized tips and cut them down to size on the cue.  Other say "I keep glueing on tips but they pop off first time I shoot"  Well that could be a few reasons from cheap glue to not properly preparing the tip, or the stick.  So follow the advice already given and take it to someone local that knows what they're doing.  Almost every pool hall I've ever been in has someone who can do them for you, and most billiard suppliers either have someone in house or they can send it out and get it back in a couple of days for you.

If you do like kevin below suggests you run the risk of chewing up your ferule, by sanding down any overhanging extra of the tip.   There are tools specifically for cutting this off without damaging the ferule.  Also, if you do your own, you'll want to burnish the outside edge of the tip, to help prevent it from mushrooming.  That's not to say that a soft tip won't mushroom, but it helps to keep it down a little.  Also, be careful when sanding down the tip of your stick, you don't want to put too much pressure on any edge, you'll risk rounding the edges of your ferule.

Dave is right about replacing your tip and I just answered a previous question about tips and it's worth mentioning again here.

A general rule of thumb for tips is, get a hard tip if you're a hard shooter and a soft tip if you're a soft shooter.

I change tips for myself and I am no pro. A you need to get is a sharp knife (e.g Stanley blade) some super glue, medium coarse sand paper( 200 p) and a tip.



1.Cut the tip off with the blade.

2. Sand the top of the cue down.

3. Apply a small amount of super glue.

4. Get the right sized tip to put on and slide it on top of the cue.

5. Leave to dry for 10 minutes and use something to hold the tip in place.

6. If the tip is too big use sand paper to cut it to size.

You can do it yourself, but if you don't know what you are doing just take it to a pro shop.  It shouldn't cost more then about 15-$20.  Keep rackn em up!
