  1. When you say you got sick from it, im assuming you meant gagging on the mold (impression) trays with the material inside it? A lot of people have this problem since the tray may cause a gag reflex due to the tray touching sensitive parts near the throat as well as the fear of the alginate material going down their throat. The best advice I can give you is:

    1) relax

    2) Breathe through your nose

    3) Distract yourself by thinking of something else

    4) Do not worry- the material will not go down your throat

  2. I don't know if this is exactly what you're supposed to do, but when I used to get mine I'd put my tongue at the very back of my mouth, as close to the top of my throat as I could, as sort of a barricade.  I made sure it wasn't too far forward to mess up the mold, but it was just far back enough to ensure nothing went too far into my throat to gag me.  (I positioned it right behind the little ridge on the roof of my mouth.)

It worked like a little wall back there, and every time I used it I got through gag-free and the mold was perfect.  Maybe if you combine that with the other answers provided here you'll be fine!

Best of luck and remember to relax. :)

  3. Avoid eating or drinking anything for at least 4 hours before your appointment.  That way, if you start to gag you will have nothing in your stomach to throw up.  Concentrate on breathing through your nose when they place the tray in your mouth.  Or concentrate your mind on something else.  Don't panic, and listen to the assistant or doctor.  The more you tense up, the worst it will be.  Good luck!
