  1. A NICE bottle of wine, scotch or whiskey

  2. Personalized elegant business card holder, nice money clip, cufflinks, nice pen set, etc.  Nothing TOO expensive or personal as he may get the wrong impression (ie. cologne, watch, etc).

  3. I'm not quite sure what a "formal" friend is.  If you mean "former" friend, as in you're not friends anymore, then why would you give them anything?  But by you saying the person helped a lot, that's probably not the case.

If you mean that the person is more than a casual friend, as in they are close, I still need to know what the occasion is for the gift.  If it's just to say thanks for being such a great friend, I think taking them out to dinner, or better yet cooking dinner is a great way to say thanks to someone you're close to, especially if you're thanking them for doing something for you because you're then doing something for them.  You could also back cookies or muffins (or other favorite dessert) or get them from a killer bakery, then put them in a nice basket with a nice card.  I'm always a big fan of putting a nice/meaningful picture either of the two of you or some place/situation that you two have shared into a nice frame.  You could even write a poem or find one that speaks of your relationship or your feelings for that person and print it on nice paper, then frame it.  It may sound a little hokey, but people really do appreciate stuff like that when it really does come from your heart.
