I'm considering using mobil1 in a '93 gl1500. Is it safe to use in a wing. Any problems with the clutch operation?

  1. After putting tons of miles on Valkyries with Mobil1 15W50 there have been reports of clutch slippage on the VRCC Technical Message Board.

    http://www.valkyrieforum.com/forum/vrcc_...

I used it for over 160,000 miles, but now have Rotella full synthetic 5W40 in my Valk , VT-600-C  and in my wife's Magna.

It looks as if Mobil Oil has modified Mobil 1 and  added more molybdenum (friction modifier) than our clutches can tolerate.

You can search and  post on the board

  2. Using synthetic oil in any bike that has a wet clutch can cause problems.  This oil is actually too slippery.  Your clutch will slip and you will eventually burn the clutch disks.  I would not try this if I were you.

Instead, I would use any name brand motor oil in the weight Honda recommends.  Then use a WIX oil filter.  These filters are much better than the made in China filters you will find at the Honda dealership.  They will cost about the same as the ones you get from the Honda dealer.

The Wix filters cost more than the more common brands like Fram.  But if you ever seen the inside of this filter along side a Fram filter, you will see it is worth the extra money.

You can use the link below to find which filter fits your bike.  Then find a local auto parts store that sells Wix filters and they can special order one for you.

  3. as long as you use a MOTORCYCLE OIL there is no problem

    what you use ,

motorcycle oil has different additives to car oil as most motorcycles tend to have wet clutches, cars dont,

    also bike engines run hotter,

bike oils specs = SAE 10W-40 - API SJ - JASO MA

car oil Oils for modern engines comply with the latest API ratings of SG and SH and are ideal for the design of a modern car,

MOTORCYCLES HAVE WET CLUTCH & RUN HOTTER THAN CARS

  4. Use the M/C version

    http://www.mobiloil.com/USA-English/Moto...

General rule,,,anything with a "40" in the grade number is OK.

    example:

    10w-30=BAD

    10w-40=OK

That is subject to change at Any time,,,

    with NO NOTICE.

So it comes down to  the Safest  Scenario being :

Stick with Oils which meets the new  standards for bike oil ,,rated safe for Wet Clutchs

    JASO MA

    .........................................

Thats No Benchracer BS argument/endorsement of Car Oil vs Bike Oil.

Simple Statement of Fact that the ONLY way a Consumer can be Certain of Clutch Compatibility is to use JASO MA spec oil.

Any of our Favorite Oil which has  worked fine for last many years,,

CAN be a totally different oil ,,maybe the very next bottle you buy.

Nobody will Tell you that,,,,until you hear it from the guy who gives you an estimate to replace your clutch.

  5. Save some bucks and use Rotella 5W40. I run it in my GL1800 and many people I know run it in their GL1500s.

About $16.00 a gallon at the Wal Mart.

According to the folks in GWRRA this seems to be the oil of choice since Mobil reformulated their oils.

You can find tons of info at:
