What would the negative aspects of teaching Global Warming in schools be?

Serious answers only, please. I really want to understand why so many people are against it. Is it just because of the extra tax $$$ that will be required?

  3. Because it's not education, it's indoctrination.  The system is essentially feeding children a political agenda.  It's teaching them something that has absolutely no consensus that every day is showing more evidence to refute it.  All it's doing is creating an army of kids saying global warming is evil and those who think otherwise are evil.  Eventually these kids are going to be the leaders of the country, and with them being indoctrinated in this hysteria, they will be making the policies and laws that will govern our lives.  We're already seeing it today with carbon emission mandates, mileage requirements on cars, even possible government intervention of a home's thermostat in California.  It's becoming commonplace, and most of it is unecessary and unfounded.  I have no problem to teach it as something of concern, but both sides of the issue must be shown.  School is meant to teach facts, concepts and methods.  It's meant to show someone how to think, not what to think.  It's like this.  I'm in my late 20's.  All throughout my youth, I was taught that recycling is the best way to help the environment and it didn't make sense NOT to recycle.  Well, being older now, it's still difficult to look at the actual facts about what recycling entails and tell myself it's not all it's cracked up to be.  Recycling can be a good thing, but there are definitely negatives.  It takes energy to recycle that material, so what we are saving in one material, we're consuming in another.  Some recycled materials literally use more energy than they save so in that regard, it's almost worse to recycle some things.  Nobody ever taught us that information when I was a kid.  And to this day, it's difficult to confront the fact that some things are better off not to recycle.  So take that type of scenario, but multiply it across every aspect of a person's day to day life, not just certain bottles and cans they might use.  If we continue down this dangerous path of teaching this as fact, and believing everything the media and government officials tell us, we will be paying for it even more than we are now.

EDIT:  Vanquish, why do you cry for the polar bears?  Their numbers have been shown be be steadily increasing.  They're not going extinct like the general news media would like you to believe.  Unfortunately, major news outlets like ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN, have all hopped on board the global warming bandwagon.  It's sad, because an outlet that is supposed to be fair and objective is very biased in what it reports.  How often do you hear the news networks report the polar bears are thriving?  How often do you hear them say the South Pole's ice mass is actually increasing?  How many times do you hear them say global warming peaked in 1998 and has since been on the decline?  When have you heard them say that recent hurricanes are not as strong as those in years past?  We never hear about any of that because what they choose to report is very selective.  If they reported the whole story, their scare tactics would be a waste of time because people would realize that the planet is not in a crisis.

  4. They should not teach it in school as it is not true. If u want to be ignorant it should not come from your teacher.

The CO2 level has not increased like they want u to believe.

         Methane where is it??????

  5. The basic principles of earth science and climate should be taught, but AGW should only be taught for what it is – an incomplete, unsettled, and yet-to-be-proven hypothesis. Both sides must be considered in order to prevent one-sided alarmism or dogmatic indoctrination. To become truly educated on the matter both sides must be presented clearly without bias, and then let the students think and deductively conclude for themselves. Obviously, younger students are not readily equipped to make this kind of appraisal, so they should not be taught it until their science and reasoning skills are more developed.

And please, don’t cry over the polar bears. It was a cartoon animation in Al’s movie, and the truth is only two of 13 populations is declining, while the other 11 abound.

Also, I don’t want to burst your bubble about “natural disasters,” but the fact is, they are natural – hence the name. Neither you, me, nor anyone else is causing them.

  6. People are against it because they're in denial about the problem.  They refuse to learn the science behind global warming because it would mean taking responsibility for our impact on the global climate and changing our lifestyles.

If the science behind global warming is taught in school, then their kids will learn about it and might even expose the adults to this information.  Plus when the kids grow up and start running the country, the adults are afraid that they'll actually do something about the problem, which would force them to change their behavior.

Basically quite a few people are in denial about the problem, and they don't want to do anything to lose that denial.

In reality we should absolutely be teaching this subject in schools.  It's quite possibly the biggest threat ever faced by mankind, and the majority of the population has almost zero understanding of the science of global warming.

  7. A majority of people that disagree are from places that cannot really measure the amount of climate change that has occured in the places that are most important, because they either cant afford cable or other forms of media, showing the damage.

Rest assured, we have changed the world climate due to our energy consumption and reluctance to modify it. Most of the un-enlightened people that say that we have not had a negative impact upon on planet, due to the current and previous energy policies are really just wasted a lot of our fresh air due to the space they have between their ears.

People are sheep. They believe what they hear and what they are fed by the media that is controlled by the corporations that dont care about the enviornment.

  8. Nothing at all wrong with it!

People are against it, because it conflicts with their lifestyle and beliefs. There is a serious disregard for mainstream science in this country. Just look at some of the posts. They rail against Al Gore, the messenger, because they can't attack the message. It's kind of sad.

EDIT - schools should teach mainstream science and only mainstream science. Anthropogenic cliamte change is mainstream science, just like the Big Bang, evolution, gravity, the 3 laws of motion.

  9. I don't agree with your statement. i think the complete opposites

  10. most of us are against it because we don't believe in " Global Warming"...

We believe in "Climate Change" which is not the same thing.. Climate change is a natural process that has been happening since time began.....

And it is already taught in school, in 7th grade Science Class....

  11. Yes i do.

I am a student and i think that all aspects of "Global Warming" and "Climate change" should be discussed. In fact when we did global warming and climate change in my environmental science class, my teacher who is pro-global warming so she taught us her view on it. Then the next day my old earth and space teacher who doesn't support global warming came in and lectured us about why he doesn't think global warming is true.

I just with we covered the topic in my honors biology class. The level one biology classes do though.

I think as a student that BOTH sides of this topic should be taught. Because right now most of the children are being taught only one side and its making them stereotypical view of the other side.

And i am a student i go to school, so i know what its like.

    EDIT

What's with the thumbs down? I am a student who goes to school! So whoever gave me a thumbs down probably is a AGW who doesn't want anymore people to know the truth about our earth. And that's so sad and stereotypical i can't even stand it much more. I am so passionate about science and i want to be a meteorologist or an environmentalist when i go to college.

So giving me a thumbs down even if i am a student is just wrong. I think that all sides of a topic should be discussed. The same goes for evolution.

  12. I'm against it the same way I'm against teaching our kids about aliens from outer space.

The science is junk.  Just because some people (including "scientists" who are depepnding on government grants for their jobs) believe it to be true does not mean it should be taught in schools.  It is closer to a religion than most religions are.  But you don't dare put a Bible in a school.  So don't you dare put anything written or produced or starring Al Gore in my kids' school.

  13. That's one of the reasons why there are so many people who deny global warming, because they are scientifically ignorant.  When they don't know about the science, they are susceptible to propaganda from the oil companies.  Teaching the basic scientific facts in schools would help us have a more meaningful debate and let people make their own decisions.

  14. The earth goes through cycles, whether hot or cold. We as animals on this earth are only doing what we can to survive, just like 1000 years ago or 10'000 years ago. Global warming is just another link in the pattern. Everyone should just get over it!

  15. What is the purpose of school?

If you believe it is meant to educate and enrich children so they may achieve their greatest potential, studies in global warming are at best a useless distraction.  On an individual level, it would best fit as a side note in a home economics course.

If you believe schools are tools to sway impressionable minds with your own ideology, global warming education should be introduced as early as possible.  The curriculum will be green socialism when the Dems are in office, and Christian consumerism when Republicans are in charge.
