I play golf with a guy who puts the ball really far forward in his stance. (Nearly in line with his front foot.) What effect does this have?

  1. I have heard that in every shot except for your drive you should put the ball in the middle of your stance. Your drive should be in the back. Unless you want to hit down on the ball and create backspin where the ball should go in the back of your stance. He will hit the ball higher.

  2. good question shorrrno! if he uses this stance through every club in the bag then he's compensating a fault that has developed with his striking ability with another fault! namely sliding his hips toward the target thro' the golf shot!! what you need to understand here is where the ball is placed in your stance at address pending on what club/shot you wish to play! if we take the driver or fairway woods or low irons 2,3,4, we would want to catch these shots as the club is just on the upstroke of our swing, so we would indeed place the ball just inside of our left foot at address, impact should only brush the turf leaving the feeling of sweeping the ball away as an ice hockey player would sweep the puck, set the ball, say level with where our heel is!

if we take iron's 5,6,7, and place the ball in the centre of our stance, then we have impact at the very bottom of the swing arc, you should cut the slightest of divots while hitting this type of shot, leaving you with the feeling of a small jolt at impact that you power thro quite easily! level the ball between your left nipple and sternum!

as for the short iron's we would position the ball back in our stance so's as to create a descending blow into the back of the ball to generate spin and control, you're left with a distinct feeling of a ball then turf impact! with a deep one piece divot that flies thro the air aswell! lesser players will think you've duffed it!  here we would position the ball no further back than your right nipple!

lets not forget that these stances are to produce a normal ball flight from the cut stuff under normal circustances yeah! if you need to cut the ball no higher than 8ft to keep under a tree just in front of you but need to advance it 150yds up the fairway to the green, then feel free to place a 3iron back into your stance and punch it up the fairway towards your intended target, equally as if you have to flop the ball 20ft over a tree and let it run 5 yds on a green close to the hole! it's all changeable to your advantage, and indeed failure if you take on something you haven't practiced!

so..... back to the original question!

if you play the ball forward in your stance you will hit it higher and quite often hit the turf first unless you move towards the target during the swing to compensate!

    hope that helps you some!

  3. When using your driver you should have the ball right inside your left foot if you are right handed.  With the other clubs you shouldnt. It just allows you to catch the ball on the upswing

  4. It will make the ball flight higher and he will have a larger chance of catching it thin.

  5. That makes the ball go higher. A lot of people use a stance like that for wood and tee shots.

  6. sorry dude,

i may not be be able to help you much..

but i remember my coach telling me,

that if my aim is to hit further, i should have a wider stance.

    why? to become more flexible

(since the course is actually not a flat land).

if i'm just using a/s/p, shorter stance would be just fine.
