Can anyone recommend a good restaurant in Durham? My parents, gran and I are visiting for a weekend. My gran likes good quality british food, not much foreign stuff, and my mum is a vegetarian and likes all types of food.

  1. My sister and I dine out in Durham quite a lot. I think if you want something a bit special with excellent quality (but not over priced!), try either Hide on Saddler Street or Oldfields on Claypath.

Both have day and nightime menus and are really comfortably designed for dining or drinking or even just a quick coffee. They both have a relaxed atmosphere and the staff are lovely (as are the menus!!) Hope this helps - we've never been disappointed with either!!

  2. There's only one vegetarian restaurant in Durham, Molly's Wholefood Store and Cafe, at 11 Front Street.  Their number is 0191 386 2216.

There may be other nice restaurants in nearby areas, though.  Try checking out the list of vegetarian and vegetarian-friendly restaurants at VegDining.com for a more complete search.

    Good luck!

  3. DUNNO BUT ID SAY ASK MATEY WHO IS REALLY PROUD OF DURHAM,

HE SAYS ITS THE ONLY COUNTY! ALL THE REST ARE LIKE HAMPSHIRE, ESSEX, SUSSEX ETC

  4. cafe/bistro 21 as good as it gets!!

  5. My favourite restaurant in Durham is the Numjai Thai restaurant -

It is one the banks of the River Wear and has a perfect view of the water. The food is absolutely fantastic and the service is great too.

Molly's Wholefood Store and Cafe, at 11 Front Street, is a vegetarian restaurant in Durham for your mum.  Their number is 0191 386 2216. There is also a gorgeous little cafe in the Almshouses near the cathedral which serves vegetarian soup, carrot cake etc. Really old and atmospheric!

Hallgarth Manor Hotel in High Pittington, near Durham, is a quiet country inn set in the rural countryside, serving nice English food, while The Royal County Hotel in Old Elvet does a nice line in food too. (But quite expensive)

There are loads of nice pubs serving tradition 'pub fayre' too, including the Olde Worlde Market Tavern in the Market Square.
