  1. Let me suggest two old fashion books for you.

Golf For Dummies by Gary McCord.  Gary is a really funny guy, and he just happens to be a past PGA Tour Pro.  So, he knows his stuff.  This will take you from zero knowledge, to knowing a lot, but still not able to execute it (that takes lots, and LOTS of practice.)

Golf By Design by Robert Trent Jones Jr.  A magnificent book that is written by one of the games top course architects.  In this book, RTJ shows you what course design is about and how every hole has built-in design issues that you as a golfer should recognize before you attempt a shot.  Basically, this book give you the ability to recognize the game plan of the apponent (the course architect, not the coure mind you.)

So, I whole heartedly suggest reading the first a couple times through, I also suggest that unless you are GIFTED in your ability to swing the club - get lessons.  (you can learn by yourself if you have talent by simply watching hundreds of swings of pros and imitating them.)    But practice, practice, practice always before you hit the links.  It will take at least three months of 2 - 3 times a week at the range to get it down.  AND for every time you are hitting balls at the range, practice twice the amount in putting.

  2. First , I would subscribe to Golf Digest. Its a wonderful magazine. Don't want to miss out on it! It helps with everything. Second, I would get some golf lessons. They will teach you the basics from how to hold the golf club to how to swing it.

I hope this helps! And welcome to the wonderful world of golf.. you'll enjoy it once you get the hang of it. Also, start watching the golf channel, its not as boring as it seems.

  3. Go to "golf.about.com". It is the most inclusive golf web site I have found. Scan down the left hand column and you can start where it says 'Beginners".

  4. http://golf.about.com/ and http://www.golf.com/golf/

Both have a lot of good information on the internet. Go to a local library and see if they have books on golf. Since you are a beginner  get lessons at a local course. With lessons early you can avoid nasty habits some of us veterans have ingrained in to our games. Good luck, and I hope you enjoy the game.

  5. You learn a lot of stuff as you go. But golf rule/ etiquette books are helpful and books about golf from the library are great also.  I've found some very helpful ones that explore everything about golf from tees to flag sticks and everything in between.  Subscribing to Golf Digest and Women's Golf would be a great way to stay informed on clubs, important people, new rules, equipment etc. You will probably find more books than sites. Some to defiantly read are books by Dr. Bob Rotella. Don't forget about lessons with a pro or very accomplished golfer so you begin with a good start. Good luck!

  6. You are very lucky to get such a great Xmas gift.  Sign up for group lessons for beginners at your local municipal course - that will get you started on the basics.  You have a long way to go before you actually get out on the course and play, but it is a journey worth taking.

  7. I would just try seaching for a golf encyclopedia.

    Or possibly a book store.

Or maybe they have a golf for dummies book.

    im not sure.

  8. Hiya  , I think  golfexplored.com  is a site worth checking out, I'm not sure of any others sorry

  9. I just started playing in July. I took lessons before I bought clubs. The pro had me hit different clubs, but did not tell me when to use what club. I have learned that from playing. Our local municipal course has a weekly golf clinic for about $30 a month. You might check to see if you have one in your area as you will be in a group where someone might ask questions you might not know to ask at this point.

Good luck and welcome to golf.
