I keep getting these people telling me that I can get a Postal worker job, admin job for the city, and other jobs, forrest worker, I don't know any job for the state or city.... user your imagination....

Anyways.... I keep telling them no one will hire me for these jobs becasue my credit score is too low and I got a drunk driving ticket 12 years ago....

Can anyone tell me if I am correct or should I apply for these jobs?

I guess also, does anyone know how far back a background check goes for this OUIL I had 12 years ago?

  1. It will depend on each job you apply for. Literally. The first thing you usually have to do is pass a civil service test or some kind of test after it is determined you are qualified for the job. Then, you will be ranked; in my state, some jobs are available only if you live in a certain town or city, some are open to everyone who lives in the state. Veterans are given preference in the ranking list.

If you score high enough to be called in for an interview, they will go over the requirments more thoroughly. My husband is in law enforcement in a county job; they did check his background and he had to go through a very long and involved interviewing process. On the other hand, I had an interview and it was a 2 part process. The only thing I have found is that they ALL check your criminal background. I don't know what determines if you are "acceptable" or not.

The federal jobs seem to require a credit check, saying they make individual determinations. I think if you are handling money or otherwise are involved with accounts at a higher level, a bad score will affect you. But, I think that you will be ok for other jobs.

You should definitely apply. Before you do, pay close attention to the job descriptions and rules that may be listed. I have seen federal ads that spell out lots of requirements and procedures, while the county and state jobs seem more cut and dry. Once you find something, go for it. Take the test and see what happens.

    Good luck!

  2. Your credit score will only affect your job if you work in the financial sector and the 12 year old ticket will not effect you. As long as you pass the civil service exam and score high they consider you qualified.
