Question:

Grants for homeschooling in Texas?

by  |  earlier

I am planning to homeschool my 6yr child because of her illness causing her to miss so much school, I want to withdraw her from school and teach her at home but want to make sure I have all the materials and correct information as well.

I was wondering if anybody knew of any kind of grants available to help get started with homeschooling.

Any information regarding grants will be helpful along with any extra information regarding Homeschooling. Thank You

  1. Try FREE public virtual school, it is  homeschool but they provide curriculum and even computer for free .

  2. There are no grants for homeschooling. When you homeschool you are responsible for the full cost of the curriculum you choose, any supplies that you require, and any classes in which your child is enrolled.

Part of the beauty of homeschooling is freeing yourself from the restraints of the government's system of education. If homeschoolers start taking money from the government, there is a good chance that government regulation will follow and rightly so.

The government owes the people an accounting of where their tax dollars are going.  Private schools are already experiencing this with government grants. Parochial (religious) private schools who accept government funds are not allowed to teach from a religious viewpoint in any program which uses federal funds. There is a push to make the same regulation apply to voucher systems as well.

Homeschooling does not have to cost a lot. By using resources from the library and buying used curriculums, you can homeschool fairly inexpensively.

  3. As far as I know, there are no grants for hs'ing in Texas.

For getting started, though, your best source of info will be www.sethsa.org (SETexasHomeSchool Assoc) and www.thsc.org  (Texas HomeSchool Coalition).  Both give great welcome packets, the legal requirements, information on support groups, etc.

I'd recommend checking those websites, as well as asking at your public library; the librarians might be able to connect you with other homeschoolers in your area.

Also, to look at curriculum, you can check out www.thehomeschoolstore.com which is a homeschool store in Houston but it will give you a pretty good overview of what is available.

Homeschooling in Texas is pretty easy, especially at 6 years old.

  4. In Texas, you are considered a private school when you homeschool your kids. You do not get grants. They do not provide you with materials. They do not even require that you use certain materials (not state does, actually). You simply do what you want to do.

It'd be a good idea to locate a homeschool support group for you to connect with as well as reading books and websites about homeschooling.

  5. To my knowledge there are no grants available for home schooling in any state.

Home schooling means that you take complete responsibility in the area of your children's education, including any cost associated with it.

Home schooling can cost as little, or as much as you want it to cost.

You can start with the minimum, use the libraries, and inter-library loan programs extensively.

There are many web sites available for free, or a very low yearly fee of about $20.00, where you can get all the materials you need to set up a complete curriculum.

I would also try to contact a local home school group for support, and get the children involved in activities, or coop's.

Often home school families will loan each other text books, or sell them to you for pennies on the dollar; this can be another great resource to get started.

I will post a long list of sites; we use these often to supplement our books, and we still use Enchanted Learning today.

    For individual state requirements go to;

    http://www.hslda.org/

This site is very active in buying, and selling home school curriculum.

    http://groups.yahoo.com/group/1001books/

This site does require a $20.00 yearly fee to have full use of all their printable materials, but it is well worth it.

You can check them out for free, but it has a lot of curriculum in one place.

Free computer software; just pay a nominal fee for shipping, some have a nominal fee as well.
