Growing mint from a clipping?

Where do you cut on the plant? How do you get it to root after?

Surprised no one has told you yet but mint is incredibly easy to propagate and grow . Too easy, because it also reproduces so easily that it becomes an invasive plant and will spread if not controlled .

Cut any branch from the stem and either place in water or just stick it in the ground and keep it watered for a week or so . With mint one could hardly do it wrong .

Your cutting just needs to be  2 to 3 inches. Check out this video on the correct size for a tip cutting when growing plants from tip cuttings:

Pick your mint leaves just before flowering & they'll root easily in water or in soil. Strip off the bottom leaves & place the bottom of the cutting  in water.

You don't even need to use a rooting powder to root mints.

Mint also easily  reproduces from long, creeping stems that spread out just under the soil surface whenever they get a chance, so you can just dig up the part of the plant that has already started to get roots attached to the soil where ever you find them spreading. I'd try to scoop up some of the soil with the plant, but it'll still grow even if you don't.  You'll have an instant starter plant that you can plant in a pot of soil. Make sure you water your mint plant to keep it from drying out.

Watering the plant the day before digging it up helps the soil cling to the roots.

You can also divide a larger mint plant by splitting it apart & planting the separated plants in individual pots (or in areas in the ground where they won't invade other plants).

Take a mint cutting that has four or 5 sections(nodes) on it and lay it horizontilly in the soil where all nodes are buried about 1/2 an inch..You will get four or five roots starting out this way instead of just one from planting it upright..cover all the whole stem laying flat with the ground and keep the end leaf above ground..then cover the whole stem and water daily..

Just cut a few stems and put in water.

You can also just stick it in the soil and it will grow.

I've taken the stems and laid them down covering in between the leaves with dirt and it grew.

OMG!  My neighbor gave me a half dead piece of mint several years ago.  I just stuck it in the ground and it took off.  It has since spread ALL over.  It comes back year after year.  That stuff is hardy!  I don't think you could do anything wrong with it.  It's also supposed to keep ants away - although I'm not sure this is true.

To grow mint from a clipping, just cut it below a leaf.

Place it in water.   Change the water every day.   Put it where it has some sun through the window.   When the roots grow, then plant it.       I just think it takes patience, and make sure you encourage it by not letting the water just sit.  I notice that when herbs sit too long in water, they begin to stink.  They will not thrive.

Cut the plant on the stem to make a 2-4 inch branch and stick the bottom of the branch about 1 inch under water. Keep is a semi-sunny spot. I bet if you asked, the people would give you some clippings for free.
