Question:

Guatemalan Safety?

I'm going on a cruise that stops in Guatemala. We are going on a shore excursion to see the Myan ruins. Should I be concerned about the safety? This is a high quality cruise line and offers the shore excursions with an additional charge. Should I be concerned?

  1. One should always be concerned and exercise caution when traveling abroad.... Stay with your excursion since there is safety in numbers... Dont drink or eat their food...or fallow indigenous guys into the forest....

  2. i am an american pastor and i am going to gua   tomorrow  i have a house there   be careful what you eat and as any where watch your surroundings but i agree with bilbo b

  3. I would not worry too much really... just use common sense and follow the same safety steps you would in any unknown country and even known country.

The Salvadorians that were killed a few days ago were politicians and that is a politician issue, not a tourist matter actually.

Try to enjoy your self and just do not count money out in the street or walk all by your self in lonely places at night.... stuff like that.

    B.

  4. I highly doubt the cruise line would recommend shore excursions if they thought you were going to get raped and murdered. I'd be more concerned with having fun.

  5. The answer is yes and no.  If you stay with your group the Tourist police are very good and protect the well known tourist areas extremely well.  If you wander off into the parts of the country where tourists don´t usually go, you will probably be OK, but not as safe as at the tourist spots.  Avoid Guatemala City outside of Zone 10 (Zona Viva), especially at night.  Antigua Guatemala is the safest and nicest tourist area in Guatemala.  If you get a chance, you should go to Antigua.
